Really, time to drop holiday "family" gatherings
Every year, people all over the country try to stab, shoot, or otherwise try to kill a dear, close member of their "family" during some "joyous family reunion". What a load.
The whole thing needs to be dropped, for sanity's sake as well as public safety. Creating a false sense of obligation wherein people feel they "have to" trek back to "grandma's house" or wherever to deal with the people in their "family of origin", many of whom they can't stand (and that's why they left), to actually eat dinner with them and stay in their annoying presence for hours... really, if I were a shrink, I'd start a movement among mental health professionals to specifically discourage "holiday family reunions". I'd state unequivocally that such events constitute a public nuisance, leading to higher incidences of suicide, murder, assault, or otherwise spurring people to do things that get them in trouble with the law or have a mental health emergency than most any other event in the general population's experience.
Seriously, it has to end. So does "Black Friday". That's another Hell we make for ourselves. The nation (i.e., the US) in deeper debt both collectively (national debt) and in terms of consumer debt than we have ever been and we're still throwing ourselves onto a giant bonfire of consumerism every year at this time, racking up yet more debt. Really, it's simply incomprehensible to me.
Pussy Pass evident here
Good point about stopping the family reunions Matt.
Note that there were no charges of murder. The charges are assault and reckless endangerment. If the perpetrator had been a man, the charges would no doubt be much more serious. Watch how, even if convicted, she will get public service or some other lame punishment totally out of proportion to the punishment given to men for a similar crime.
Yes
But she didn't kill him, so murder as a charge wouldn't be warranted. Attempted murder? Hmm, maybe, depending. One can assault another person and strike them in a very vulnerable and life-threatening place and still not really be intending to commit murder or some other homicide. In contrast, a punch in the eye, while usually not life-threatening, can if delivered with enough force kill a person, so it's possible to be killed any number of ways even when the attacker doesn't intend it.
I suppose it depends on the circumstances. But by and large I agree women are much less likely to face charges as serious as men face for the same crime. Imagine if she had been a he and he had been a she (ie, roles reversed). I agree that no doubt he'd be facing far more serious charges.
possible charges
She should have been charged with attempted murder, battery, and aggravated mayhem.
