Women at Wilson College of Chambersburg protest proposal to allow men

Story here. Excerpt:

'A committee was formed earlier this calendar year to address Wilson College's financial struggle and find ways to make the college financially sustainable in the future. At an open presentation Nov. 1, the Commission on Shaping the Future of Wilson College made several recommendations, including the co-ed option, for increasing enrollment from 700 this fall to 1,500 by 2020 and easing the budget deficit.

The commission gave its final recommendations to President Barbara Mistick Monday. She must hand over her own recommendations by Dec. 1 to Wilson's board of trustees, which will make the final decision. Until then, students are doing what they can to sway decisions.

"We want Wilson to keep that 'it' factor of being an all-women's college because there aren't that many left in the United States. We don't just want to become another mediocre co-ed situation," said Janelle Wills, president of Wilson College Government Association.

While men are already permitted in the adult degree and teacher intern programs, Wills believes incorporating them in every aspect of campus life would significantly change culture and traditions.

Some students are also concerned that some of the posters are communicating the wrong message. One student referred to a poster that read "Women," but with "men" crossed out, and said she thought it was sexist. Another well-known poster referred to Mistick as a "mistake."

"The sign about the president, that's drawing attention away from the real issue," Grissinger said.'

Hmm, as I recall, that was the common complaint from people at men's colleges in the US when the suggestion arose to make them co-ed.

Yes, there are a lot fewer women's colleges in the US than there used to be. But there are a lot fewer men's colleges, too. Eliminating religious and non-board-certified schools, the US has a grand total of 5 (you read that right) men's colleges left. How many women's? 49. (See list here). I added one to the list count since it seems to have left out the college mentioned in this article. But someone from Wilson posted a comment saying that indeed, they were there!

The need for money comes for the a time to open up their arms for males. Let's not be fooled by the intention...which I believe is stated outright, that they need men in their school to bring in funds. This isn't a matter of stating men should have the opportunity to attend this college equally as women.

My recommendation would to be keep the status quo and allow these women to show how they can do it on their own....or let it drown in the gender biased abyss and close it's doors. There is no telling how many feminists are teaching and being created by this institution.
