Prostate Cancer Awareness Week Is Coming Up
This is to let everyone know that Prostate Cancer Awareness Week is Sept. 18-24, 2000. There's a web page, www.pcaw.com, which has a list of free or low-cost screenings around the country you can attend if you are over the age of 50 or a "high risk" (if it's in your family medical history or you're an African American) male over the age of 35. Click on "Read More" to read a general announcement about PCAW, and please do something to promote awareness of it - write a letter to your local newspaper about it, or buy some prostate cancer awareness US postage stamps.
12th Annual Prostate Cancer Awareness Week: September 18-24, 2000
Prostate Cancer Awareness Week is the nation's largest
cancer screening
program having attracted over 3 million participants. It was
developed
because of the alarming percentage of men presenting
advanced, incurable
prostate cancer. The Prostate Tests/Screening have reduced
mortality from
the disease as much as 42%. And yet, it is estimated that
over 31,000 will
die this year because they didn't get an examination soon
enough.
If you are a man over 50, or are an African American man
over 35 or have a
history of prostate cancer in your family, let this be your
reminder to
arrange a free or low cost appointment now to get tested.
For the location
nearest you, see http://www.pcaw.com. If you want a free

The national chairmen of this campaign are General Norman
Schwartzkopf, who
has served as since 1994. In 1996, actor Danny Glover
joined as co-chairman
in order to help recruit African American men, who have a
223% greater
incidence of prostate cancer and over 30% greater chance of
dying from
prostate cancer than other men. This year, legendary golfer
Arnold Palmer has
joined in the fight.
This is a national education, service and research program.
The first year
of the program (1989), there were fewer than 100 screening
centers in the
United States. Today, this number has increased to over 300
locations
providing free or low-cost prostate cancer screening with
digital rectal
examination (DRE) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
testing during Prostate
Cancer Awareness Week.
This public awareness and education program was conceived
and instituted by
the Prostate Cancer Education Council (PCEC) which
represents urology,
oncology, patient advocacy, minorities, clinical and
behavioral research.
The PCED was formed in 1988 to promote awareness, screening
and early
detection of prostate cancer.
If you are a man 15-34, you may be at risk of developing and
dying from
testicular cancer. To find out more, see
www.menstuff.org/issues/byissue/testicular.html. If you
would like to
sign-up for our free monthly self-exam reminder, you can do
that at
http://www.menstuff.org/feedback/feedbackTesticules.html.
Please pass this information on to all of the men you know,
and to those who
care about men. And, please put it on your listserv, if you
have one. Yours
in good health.
