Gloria Allred seeks Rush Limbaugh prosecution
Story here. Excerpt:
'Rush Limbaugh has drawn the ire of celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred, who sent a letter to the Palm Beach County state attorney requesting an investigation into whether the popular radio host should be prosecuted for calling a law student a “slut” and “prostitute” last week.
“Mr. Limbaugh targeted his attack on a young law student who was simply exercising her free speech and her right to testify before congress on a very important issue to millions of American women and he vilified her. He defamed her and engaged in unwarranted, tasteless and exceptionally damaging attacks on her,” Allred told POLITICO Friday afternoon. “He needs to face the consequences of his conduct in every way that is meaningful.”
...
In a letter dated March 8, Allred, writing on behalf of the Women’s Equal Rights Legal Defense and Education Fund, requested that Palm Beach County State Attorney Michael McAuliffe probe whether the conservative radio personality had violated Section 836.04 of the Florida Statutes by calling Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke the two derogatory words.
The statute stipulates that anyone who “speaks of and concerning any woman, married or unmarried, falsely and maliciously imputing to her a want of chastity” is guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree. Allred explained that the statute recently came to her attention as having never been repealed, and that it could very well apply to Limbaugh’s remarks as his show is broadcast from West Palm Beach.
...
She added, “Hitting him economically is one price that he has to pay. He needs to be accountable in every way possible.”'

Both of them are wrong
Limbaugh was not only wrong in his behavior, but mean as well. So be it, he is behaving like a bully. But a lot of people both on the "left" and "right" use their microphones to bully others. IMO, he should not have said the things he said. Bad manners, bad discretion. That established, Allred is no better than Limbaugh in her ways as well. Trying to invoke an aged sumptuary statute that is clearly in direct contravention of her beloved free speech ideals? I wonder if she would stand up as readily for a man were there a law prohibiting the exact same behavior regarding a man's chastity? Anyone who can't see she is entirely politically-motivated is lying to him- or herself.
I do not stand up for either of these people. But I do stand for the right of free speech, even if it is detestable speech by someone's standards. Undoubtedly in my time I have been ridiculed either for what I have said or for my beliefs, in front of or behind my back, or perhaps (one day) nationally. I may even be accused of being a "male slut" some day and asked to make pornos for others' enjoyment (very unlikely, admittedly :)). But when or if that day comes, I will acknowledge the right of others to speak that way, and also suggesting that maybe, just maybe, their behavior makes them look a whole lot worse than I ever did by whatever it is I have said.
I'd laugh if she weren't so serious
Women hold "Slut Walks" but get offended when people call them sluts.
Women want to be "empowered sexually" but then pull out an ancient law that forbids imputing to a woman "a want of chastity." Women apparently want to be sluts--just not be called sluts.
So the question now is: Is Sandra Fluke chaste as defined by this ancient law?
If chaste, why does she need birth control? If she's not chaste, Rush was completely justified.
Allred would need to prove Fluke was indeed chaste in order to make her case against Rush. Rush would have the right to ask Fluke about her "chasteness." Is that really where Allred wants to go.
As to Rush, he was boorish and stupid, but after listening to 50 years of incessant feminist criticism of men, I don't much care if women were offended by his comments. I don't believe it's okay for women to criticize men but it's not okay for men to criticize women.
don't apologize.
He should have never apologized... he's feuked now.
These two should spend as
These two should spend as much time suing and otherwise involving themselves in each other's life as possible since as long as they're doing that maybe they won't be annoying the rest of us.
"If chaste, why does she need birth control? If she's not chaste, Rush was completely justified."
A woman not being chaste does not make her a slut or a prostitute anymore than a man takes on those terms just because he isn't chaste. Rush was absolutely wrong to bash her repeatedly over a number of days insinuating she had lines of men lined up outside her door and comparing her to a prostitute, especially when the vast majority of women in this country use or have used hormonal birth control. He also seemed to think women pay more for birth control pills if they have more sex, which was the basis of his 'line of men' comments I assume.
Even if we want to be totally selfish about it, do you think reducing access to birth control for women is going to lead to more or fewer false paternity accusations? More or fewer abortions without a partner's input? More or fewer children born out of wedlock where men has considerably fewer rights in this country?
It all depends on how one defines "chaste"
"Chaste" was likely defined in a very narrow sense when the law was passed. I doubt few women today would be considered "chaste." If she indeed is having sex routinely outside marriage, that would not be considered "chaste"--which pretty much means sex only within marriage.
That doesn't make her a "slut"--but I doubt she'd pass the test for being "chaste," as it's a very narrow standard.
What a hypocrite!
Isn't this the same woman who just a few weeks ago was praising the legal system for upholding a woman's right to bash her ex-boyfriend and ruin his reputation online? I guess her mentality is "hooray for the first ammendment, until a man bashes a woman, then it's totalitarianism for all of us."
At least those commenting on the story are not giving Gloria an easy time about it.
While I agree that the comments that Rush made were tasteless, I didn't see any sponsors pull out from The Talk when they had the nerve to make fun of the victim of the worst case of domestic violence against a man I've ever heard of. I also didn't see a legal effort to sue the hosts for their tastelessness. Where was Gloria then?
