Penn State and child sexual abuse: Men-as-only-predators machine up and running
I have already seen it in action. It has shown up in articles written by people who assume that only men can be sexual predators and that if women had known about this or other similar situations, they would have certainly handled it differently. On the contrary, at least one female authority figure in recent news does not seem to care too much about what happens to male victims of sexual abuse when the abuser is female.
None of the foregoing is to excuse those who knew what happened at Penn State but chose to stay as uninvolved as possible. People who know about or reasonably suspect that child abuse of any kind is occurring have every duty and obligation to sound the alarm as much as they can; in the case of the Penn State officials/employees involved, they needed to see the police about the allegation and everyone involved needed to step up and go into overtime to make sure the accusation was investigated thoroughly, which would have undoubtedly resulted in its substantiation. Instead, by sitting on it, not only did they allow children to continue to be abused but destroyed themselves in the process; if they had just done the right thing, they would all still have their jobs and reputations.
This is an older article but still very good. Feel free to share it with the next person who says that only men are sexual predators or that if it had been women at Penn State who knew about the abuse, it would have been stopped. In addition, this bibliography on works regarding female sexual predation is also a good reference.
