India: Male students cringe at getting less seats in BCom

'CHANDIGARH: Boys are clearly at the receiving end as far as admission to BCom course is concerned due to less number of seats available for them as compared to girls in city colleges.

There are around 4,000 seats available, out of which 2,140 are in 11 colleges. Five are girls colleges whereas five are co-educational and only one is a boys college. This creates a huge difference of around 700 in the number of seats available for boys and girls.

''Nearly 700 male students who had got good ranks have been adversely affected. There are cases where boys with 1700 or 1800 rank, could not get admission whereas a girl with a rank up to 2500 easily did so,'' K Tankeshwar, director of PU computer centre who coordinated the online BCom counselling this time, told TOI.

BCom is one of the most sought-after courses in city colleges and students from Delhi, Himachal, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir and Bihar had applied for admissions this year. ''There should be a balance between the seats available for boys and girls. Due to this gap, many boys are either forced to leave Chandigarh or to change their stream,'' said a senior PU official. PU had received nearly 10,000 applications; more than double the available seats.'
