South Africa Debuts Anti-Rape Female Condom, seeks testing "during World Cup"

Story here. Excerpt:

'Ehlers, a 62-year-old physician, lab researcher and hematologist -- and a mother of two daughters -- spent the next four decades developing a female condom with jagged latex hooks that latch onto the skin of an attacker. Dubbed "Rape-aXe," the condom is inserted with an applicator like a tampon, and it clenches a man's penis and causes "immense discomfort" without drawing blood. It can only be removed by medical professionals, who are being familiarized with the device in order to contact South African police when they see one.

"I'm not out for vengeance. It doesn't leave permanent damage to the penis, but there will be tiny little scars to remind him of what he's done -- something his wife or future wife might ask him about," Ehlers said.

The new condom was patented in 2007, and Ehlers hopes to begin selling it in South African pharmacies and grocery stores soon. It's being evaluated by the country's Bureau of Standards and would sell for about $2.50. Meanwhile, Ehlers has distributed samples to 100 unnamed women across South Africa this week, for initial testing during the World Cup.'

So, some women will put it on, then place "rape me!" signs on their backs and wait to see how the thing does? Or will it be one of those "Well, sports=rape, so of course women will get raped now that the WC is in town, so we have our test group right here!"

I am intrigued and disgusted all at the same time.

This is just another feminist sword thinly disguised as a shield. Rather than prevent rape, it is transparently a weapon women can use to punish boyfriends/husbands or maybe just males in general. The presumption is that women would only use this on men who rape them—"He had it comin'." In reality, all that can be proven by a man thus injured is that sex took place: you don't know if she was raped or he was assaulted; without a biased assumption, you don't know who is the true victim.

her idea is to make a device that only works after he has pinned her and penetrated... if its not about revenge why does she go on about his experience during and later on? She wants men's wives and girlfriends to catch them as previous rapists?!? she's clearly promoting a vengeful mentality (when ot should be about smart choices) and suspicion of men.

also practically speaking it does not prevent violence, nor would it prevent most date rape.

more generally why is it that I am never given any advise to protect myself as a man when something is more likely to happen to me?

Lets say a women in this country used this Rape-aXe device. She then claims she was raped but the police determine it was a false accusation. Does she get charged with sexual assault for damaging the innocent mans penis?

From Wiki:

"The corpus cavernosum penis is one of a pair of sponge-like regions of erectile tissue which contain most of the blood in the penis during penile erection. This is homologous to the corpus cavernosum clitoridis in the female; the body of the penis contains erectile tissue in a pair of corpora cavernosa (literally "cave-like bodies"), with a recognisably similar structure."

This woman claims this device while painful, is harmless. I beg to differ. According to the above excerpt an erection occurs when sponge like tissue fill with blood. What happens if this device pierces a vein? The guy could potentially bleed to death. She claims it doesn't cause bleeding but has it ever been used? I doubt any man would volunteer as a test subject.

As for this being a rape deterrent? I don't think so. If this device gains popularity here in the US, a would be rapist could simply place his finger into her vagina to make sure she's not wearing one. He could also just take it out. I also fear a rapist could become violent if one of these things attach to his penis.

What happens if a woman inserts this device because she knows she'll be walking through a dark parking lot and wants protection. She then meets up her husband for drinks, they both get a little drunk and go home and have sex. During intercoarse, She FORGETS to take the device out!

Honestly, aside from a few man hating feminists, the vast majority of women will not use Rape-aXe. Unlike feminists, the average women doesn't live their lives in a constant rape phobia. I told my girlfriend about this is and she was repulsed by the idea of sticking a weapon in her vagina.

Statutory rape. Its common knowledge female teachers have raped boys as young as 12. Could the boy apply something to his penis to damage her vagina? I hope not, that would be disgusting.

This whole thing is reprehensible. Of coarse I'm against rape, but I'm also adamantly against any type of genital mutilation. Whether it be a man or woman. This includes removing a boys foreskin, damaging a girls clitoris, or using medieval torture devices.
