Women's-Only Gyms Rock The Nation

Article here. Excerpt:

'Though Pink Iron has been open to the female gym-going public since April, yesterday marked their official launch as L.A.'s premier women's only, full service health and fitness center created by Holly Holton, a certified personal trainer and globally ranked fitness competitor.

Holton came up with the idea after working for Gold's Gym, realizing that the market was primed for "a fun, motivating, and unique environment where women could sweat without having creepy dudes drool on them!" Sing it, sister!

But what if you don't live in Los Angeles? Actually, there are more than a few women's-only gyms across the country.
...
So if self-consciousness or dude issues keep you from busting a sweat at the gym, check your town for a female-only option. It might be just what the personal trainer ordered.'

Gentlemen,

I attended gyms regularly from 1986-2002, usually 3x per week, mostly Golds and Bally's.
in the afternoons and evenings; in several larger cities and metro areas to boot. NEVER ONCE did I see any of the slightest indication of a meat market atmosphere, I never once saw a man stare at a woman, or say anything suggestive to a woman or even try to be friendly with one for that matter. (Basically, there is very little talking that goes on in gyms anyway, besides the aerobics instructor shouting.)

Nor did I ever see a woman look disgusted or put off by a man. Not even the slightest scowl. Gyms are very 'p.c.' in all these respects precisely so as not to fall into the 'meat market' stereotype.

If anyone here has seen any of the above occur, I would be very interested in hearing of such 'incidents.'

Until then I must believe that this is merely part of the ongoing effort to separate men from women.

I have been to the gym many times, if anything men want women to piss off. I never saw any man staring at women, the men were concentrating on their workout. Women flatter themselves into thinking men can't stop thinking about them. This is about giving women privileges over men, men can't have a men-only space but women can. Perhaps men in the area should start protesting outside the gym demanding to be let in, just like the lesbians and feminists did to men-only gyms.

I have met guys at the gym, but it may be because of my age at the time (18) and I was meeting other 18 to 22 year olds. I also am some what of a flirt myself. I always smile and make small talk with people.

One guy that asked me out was a Bally's employee and I have had other guys approach me at other places, they come up by saying "Hey, I know you from Bally's...." I'm not really sure if it is a 'pick up' or just being friendly.

It also works both ways. I know plenty of girls that go to the gym to pick up guys. That's where I would go myself if I were single and wanting to date.

My sister met her husband at the gym. She's not the gym type and she is not a flirt. But she went one time and was in the hot tub and they started talking, they went out for awhile and are now married.

But I have never noticed people being bothered. If you want to be left alone, it's easy to do.

As far as separate clubs for genders, I am not really against it, as long as males have equal opportunity to have their own clubs. I understand separating genders for health reasons and I consider working out to be health related. When it comes to exercising, it is nice to have machines that are designed for a women's body (smaller in size and narrow shoulders and shorter arm span). And classes and employees that are trained in women's bodies and the goals of women.

If there were male only gyms, they could focus on the needs and work-out goals of men.

Look at some of the comments when this issue is discussed (this thread as well as others), men get annoyed at women's work out habits. One man was frustrated by a woman lifting a 5 lb weight. At gender specific clubs, it would not be an issue.

I do not know how successful gender only clubs will be (in my area they seem to shut down after awhile). Someone mentioned that only female health clubs are legal. Any one know if that is the true in USA? If it is, that is wrong as both genders should have equal opportunity.

Kris,

apparently your country is different than the U.S. with regard to interaction in gyms. I am not saying no two people ever meet in them over here, but I suspect it would usually be the woman who initiates such a thing. Also it seems like staff generally do not 'fraternize' with the customers so much.

Ive been going to the gym week in, week out, for over five years and have never seen anyone drooling except a gay guy who obviously has a thing for Asian boys! Occasionally a teen male will sneak a look at a female but thats it, and ive never seen or even heard of any sexual harassment happening in that place. Fact is, we're simply too busy trying to get that big freakin' weight off our chests to give a damn what women look like.

... in the US it is also legal to have male only gyms, though i've never seen the proprietors of those spout the sexist garbage the female owners do. Here in Aus, female legal, male illegal! How 'bout that?

"men get annoyed at women's work out habits"
no we dont, unless she's decided to sit down in front of your favorite machine without using it, or assumed that just because shes female she should have right of way despite the fact that youre lugging a pair of 75lbers and shes carrying a pair of ten pounders( both real life examples from my gym). Otherwise we care not.

I'm in the US, Ax. Sorry, as I see how my sentences was written, it could give the impression that I am not.

I just know that when I wrote about this subject before, someone from Australia mentioned that 'male only' clubs are illegal there. It never donned on me that only one gender would be legal, so now I am asking if 'male only' clubs are legal in the US. Does anyone know for sure, or know of any male only clubs? (I see MC post above indicating that male only clubs are legal in the US)

You had asked for examples of people using the health club as a dating site, so I was replying. From my experience it has never been a 'meat market' atmosphere and if singles are trying to meet each other, I would say the genders are doing it equally. Other than my sister meeting her husband in the hot tub, and myself having an employee ask me out (and I thought he was hot, so I was encouraging it), all the other interactions I can think of took place off the premises. I don't see it as a problem or a bother to anyone.

Anyway, I don't have a problem with 'gender only' clubs if the purpose is to better serve the customers. But I can see how guys take offense with the comment about women not wanting "creepy dudes drooling over them". That sounds sexist and conceited to me.

IMO, both genders should have equal opportunity to have their own health clubs, if that's what they want.

I thought California (or whatever is left of it) has a gender bias law that forbids same sex only businesses like this?

Could some male or males in California be in for a $$$weet payday$$$ by filing a gender bias suit against the misandric pigs?
