Speaker: Masculinity at heart of violence

Article here. Excerpt:

'WATERLOO - Dealing with domestic and community violence is about facing issues of masculinity, according to Harry Brod.

That doesn't mean fighting against men.

"I always position myself as his ally, not his adversary," Brod said during his keynote speech.

Brod, a professor of philosophy and humanities at the University of Northern Iowa, spoke during the morning portion of the Safety, Accountability and Justice in Reducing Domestic and Community Violence conference. The event was Wednesday at Hawkeye Community College.

Brod also served as director of the Iowa Regent Universities Men's Gender Violence Prevention Institute and on the Iowa Governor's Task Force for Responsible Fatherhood.

In his view, masculinity plays a role in nearly all violence committed. School shooters often are bullied and mocked for not being masculine enough - which leads them to lash out - and husbands abuse their partners to assert dominance.'

Why certainly, we need to re-engineer boys and men some more - after all, that has been very effective so far, hasn't it? No boy would ever lash out becuase he is being treated by teachers and others as inherently flawed, due to his simply being a boy, would he?? How ridiculous!!

...why does the FEMININE gender commit most of the child abuse and a third of the serious domestic violence, despite having been socially conditioned to do otherwise?
