10-Year-Old boy gets $260 fine, misdemeanor charge for leaving classroom

Story here. Excerpt:

'EL PASO, Texas -- It all started with a phone call. “Well, the school called me it was about nine, and told me that my son had an incident at school,” said Charity Walka, recalling a morning about a month ago.

But little did Walka know that her son’s trouble in class would hit her in the pocket. She said her son has a behavioral disorder and was on medication and couldn’t stay awake in class at Travis Elementary School.

"So he fell asleep again, and when they tried to wake him, he got angry,” Walka said.

She said her son then left the classroom after a teacher tried to restrain him. She said her son also made noise in the hall and he laid down on the floor and wouldn’t get up. For disrupting class, officers at El Paso Independent School District gave her 10-year-old son a ticket for $260 and it is a Class C Misdemeanor. She said her son did not hurt anyone.

"It was just devastating. I was just so angry. He doesn't understand," Walka told KFOX.'

No real news. This young boy probably got a harsher punishment than a female teacher would get for molesting him....And definitely more than a 10-year-old girl would get for inventing a rape.

Well, he may as well learn early the zero-tolerance policy for having a penis.

Hell, it's Texas - he'll be lucky if they don't execute him!

that would be day one of home schooling for my kids.

I would suggest that the mother look into the meds. They can alter a personality and some can cause a manic period and then cause the person to come crashing down (probably the reason for him falling asleep). I don't like putting kids on meds and I believe they are dangerous as I assume these are ADD/ADHD drugs.

Also it said the teacher tried to restrain him. It did not elaborate, but I know if some one tried to restrain a kid on ADD drugs that it could escalate the situation as many of these drugs cause uncontrollable adrenaline and kids go into 'fight or flight' mode.

Homeschooling is the answer as public schools will not help any kid that does not conform (private school is not much better).

BTW- I have kicked myself about my decision to put my kids in public school this year, but I felt it was my only choice now that I am working full time. After speaking to their father, and feeling like a hypocrite for criticizing other mothers that choose to work, I have decided to quit so I can homeschool.

I have already seen the effects of the public school indoctrination system. I can hardly wait to get my household under control and spend more time with my kids.

BTW- the teacher knows that I have homeschooled in the past (teachers are generally against this as they feel that THEY are the only ones qualified to teach). She gave my son compliments but then she said he was 'too competitive'. I asked her what she meant and she said that he always tries to sit in the front, always be first, raises his hand for everything, etc. She felt this was due to lack of social skills because he has never been in a structured class before. I had to laugh. Only public schools would see competitiveness as a problem. (also tends to be a boy trait)

too competitive...

and after they complain that kids and teenagers keep dropping out of school.

in my area, schools can't find enough teachers and are resorting to unqualified personnel. i wouldn't be surprised if this problem happened elsewhere.
