Study says men better at paying bills

Article here. Excerpt:

'NEW YORK (Reuters) - Men and women handle their personal finances much differently, research shows, with men more likely to keep a close eye on their spending and investments and to pay their bills on time.

The gender gap emerged in the results of financial planning questionnaires filled out by some 3,500 U.S. workers nationwide for Financial Finesse Inc., an employee benefits company.

The data showed two-thirds of men but just one-third of women said they regularly pay their credit card balances in full, said Liz Davidson, chief executive of the company based in Manhattan Beach, California.'

Like all such 'studies', I take them with a grain of salt. I don't see how men can be 'naturally' better at finance than women when it comes to paying bills. Some people are just better at tracking bills and expenses than others, maybe this study shows men tend to be better at it. Tomorrow a study from someplace else will have an opposite conclusion.

I have met people who have problems not so much with getting the money to pay bills but remembering to do so. It's just a matter of where one's attentions tend to go. The fix for this is simply to get on bill auto-pay with some service (bank, credit card, etc.) and then you're fine.

This study is not so much an indication of inherent abilities of the genders as it is a reflection of society's gender roles, and traditional views toward chivalry. If you look at who spends money in the average American household, it is the woman, by far. If you look at who earns the money in the average American household, it is the men, and historically it has been the men, although that is changing as more women enter the work force. So men are supposed to sweat, and labor, and take risks, and sacrifice themselves, so that they can get the money that women will go on to spend. So why should we be surprised that men are better at paying bills? It does not so much indicate an area where men have superior adaptation, or superior functionality, rather it indicates an area where men are enslaved.

"I don't see how men can be 'naturally' better at finance than women when it comes to paying bills."

It's simple.

Men do (and are expected to) take responsibility for their actions and debts.

Women have much less desire, and much less social expectation placed on them, to take responsibility for themselves.
