Ireland: False rape report as bad as crime

'The printed media is often accused of having a hidden agenda, or a pronounced political slant to one party or set of ideals. It is refreshing therefore to read Kevin Myers' contributions on the subject of gender in your publication.

His recent column on the Michael Hannon case (Irish Independent, May 5) highlighted the clear double standards that pressure groups have when the victim doesn't conform to their gender expectations.

Rape is a heinous crime, but just as we condemn and punish perpetrators, we should do so equally to those who falsely accuse men of this crime.

A few high-profile cases in the UK recently clearly highlighted that some people believe that the rape accusation itself is as much evidence as is needed.'
