California has a law like few, if any, other states have - the Unruh act.
Under the Unruh act, it is against CA law to charge one sex more for goods or services than the other.
If one sex is charged nothing to get into an event, but another is charged a fee, that's illegal. I'm not sure all the specifics, but there have been many successful lawsuits under the Unruh act with men often winning as well as women.
Some Unruh act cases are settled out of court for a certain undisclosed dollar amount, on terms that there be a "confidentiality agreement," so details of some cases are never publicly known.
