UK: Dinosaurs, science and Pompey get boys into reading

Story here. Excerpt:

'A school has improved boys' writing abilities – by bringing in more books on subjects they get excited about.

Dinosaurs and science get a greater showing in Medina Primary School's library where boys outnumber girls.

In one class there are 21 boys to just nine girls, which has led to staff adapting their teaching style.

And with its focus on writing – particularly among boys – the Portsmouth school has been rated 'good' by watchdog Ofsted.

Headteacher Howard Payne said: 'There's an issue with boys writing nationally so we've increased our non-fiction area in the library so there are more books on things like science and dinosaurs.'

You know this reminded me of something I had forgotten form nearly fifty years ago. I had no interest in books. Then I remember some slim volumes appearing in school on history. They had pictures of things like Roman Soldiers on the dust cover. This did interest me and I recall being interested in reading them in a way that I never was with other books. Space travel was also something that attracted me to books.

I learned math in elementary school by equating numbers with baseball statistics. If a hitter has three hits in ten at bats, he has a .300 average. If a pitcher gives up 27 earned runs in 100 innings, he has a 2.70 ERA. In fact, the Baseball Encyclopedia was my favorite book growing up. Go figure.

*note*

ERA is Earned Run Average, not Equal Rights Amendment {:
