Maternity leave and equality laws are 'sabotaging' women's careers

'Generous maternity leave and flexible working practices are in danger of sabotaging women's careers, the head of the new equality watchdog has warned.

With women now entitled to a year off for each child, Dr Nicola Brewer, the chief executive of the Equalities and Human Rights Commission, said employers were thinking twice about offering them jobs or promotion.

She said that her concerns were underlined when the entrepreneur Sir Alan Sugar said that many employers simply binned CVs of women of child-bearing age.

Sir Alan warned in February that equal opportunity laws had made it harder for a woman to get a job.

Employers are not allowed to ask women about having children - so they would just not employ them, he said.'

Endless griping about getting "time off" to have kids, and an insistence that this not be held against them in terms of status and promotion/salary. They finally get it.

Now it's a cause for complaint.

I suppose the remedy will be simply to install absolute hiring quotas on employers. All hires must be *exactly* proportionate in all areas and ways in the company M:F ratio. But why stop there? Let's include that for people's ehtnicities, too. And religious beliefs. And size and weight and eye color, and....

"Idiocracy" indeed.

Certainly the intention of these remarks are not to reduce women's privileges but to argue for more of them and more rigorous application of 'equality legislation'. Equality ministers don't make remarks like this to reduce women's privileges but to have them reinforced.

I'm not usually much of a sympathizer with companies, managers, corporate culture etc. but I can hardly fault an employer for placing importance on the bottom line..if I was a manager trying to hold a company together as well as feed my own family, the last thing that should have to be on my mind is whether some (voluntarily) pregnant lady who works for me can't imagine that she might not come back to the company at the same or higher level even one year after whe left..why should I have to "hold a place" for her?

Women asked for it and they got it. They are fu**ing themselves over and they are fu**ing up corporations and the economy. All in the name of "equity".

"Gee - you mean I really have to work??"
