Vonage ads: "Men are stupid" theme

A Vonage TV advertisement, now blanketing the air waves, is annoying because it is gender biased. In the ad, "The Telephone Company" portrayed by a male is gradually pushed off the screen by Vonage, portrayed by a woman, each time a point is made in favor of Vonage. In this ad, the male is made to look stupid and weak compared to the woman and the company he represents as inferior. Imagine if the roles were reversed on this spot and the woman were pushed off the screen because she was inadequate, inferior, or second-rate. There would be all kinds of outcry from women's groups. I am appalled by this kind of male abuse in TV advertising. The TV is loaded with commercials in which men are portrayed as being stupid, weak, and inadequate. What can I do to stop this?

Ed. note: Various Vonage ads are found here. They exhibit a pattern of "men are stupid" types of scenes, usually with men getting injured in the process. This one is all about good old-fashioned testicle violence. More found on Youtube here.

To answer the submitter's question, this is what to do: Point out the phenomenon to the advertiser by email, phone call, or fax, and tell them such things do affect your purchasing decisions, and that if they win one woman with these ads, they will be losing three men. Do the math.

As for Vonage in particular, their contact page is here. The "Email" and "Phone" buttons are very large and easy to miss at first glance. They are light blue, right next to the orange "Start Here" on the left side. Click either of these other two buttons to get email and phone/fax information. Then go to town!

My letter:

Hi. I'm not actually a customer of vonage, nor will I ever be. Why you ask? Because I'm a man, and I don't enjoy seeing companies like yours make advertisements which make men look like idiots and which try to trivialize violence against men and make comedy out of it. Take the skier ad for instance. I'm so tired of people thinking genital attacks are funny. They're offensive. It's as appropriate as making a joke about rape to try to sell your product. I just thought you should know why I would rather die a slow painful death than be a customer of vonage. Now u know. Some people do stupid things... like buy phone service from a company that insults their gender.

I was considering Vonage. Think I'll keep using cell instead (even though T-Mobile sucks, since they use Verizon for customer service).
