Woman loses final embryo appeal

The interesting case that's been going on for awhile about the UK woman wanting to use existing embryos against the father's consent seem to have been resolved, in favor of the would-be father. Excerpt:

'A woman left infertile after cancer therapy has lost her fight to use embryos fertilised by an ex-partner.
Natallie Evans, from Trowbridge, Wilts, and Howard Johnston began IVF treatment in 2001 but he withdrew consent for the embryos to be used after they split up.

She turned to the European courts after exhausting the UK legal process.

Ms Evans, 35, said she was "distraught" after the Grand Chamber of the European Court ruling, but Mr Johnston said "common sense had prevailed."'

It's interesting that everyone seems to fall on one side or the other with this issue. Personally, I was happy to see that the rights of this man were taken into account. On the other hand, it is unfortunate that this woman will never be allowed to reproduce since she was snipped in the process. The larger issue is whether or not the man would have been expected to support the baby should the verdict have gone the other way? I would have had nothing against her having the baby if and only if the man had the CHOICE to walk away from the baby once it was born since he obviously left her before implantation. Of course in this feminized society of women's rights and men's responsibilities, this probably would not have been the case, and he would have been expected to bear the burden.

Here's to hoping that a men's Roe v. Wade finally comes to pass - one day!

Anything involving the killing of someone's embryonic child is not the sort of "victory" we need.

You know, I gotta disagree with you there. If this situation had turned out the other way, a man's right to his own genetic material would not have been respected.

Can you imagine a woman being placed in the same situation, where the fate of her child/fetus/egg/genetic material is in the hands of some court? Heck, even surrogate mothers have more rights than the father or couple who is paying them to have the baby.
