Duke University Suspends Fraternity Over Rape Allegation
Story here. (Thanks, ThomasI, for mentioning this report here.) And indeed as ThomasI says, with no hearing of any kind, an immediate suspension of the *entire* fraternity because a sexual assault has been alleged.
'Duke University says it has suspended a fraternity while police investigate allegations a woman was sexually assaulted at an off-campus party.
A statement from the university says Alpha Delta Phi has been suspended while Durham police investigate what happened at an off-campus house leased by fraternity members.
Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez told WRAL-TV that his department is seeking information from anyone at the Jan. 8 party. No charges had been filed as of Tuesday afternoon.
Local media outlets obtained a search warrant that says the woman told police she had drinks at the party before awaking the next day in only a T-shirt. The warrant says the last thing she remembers was dancing with friends.
The warrant says investigators took a mattress, comforter and condom from the house.'

The problem
The issue with what is happening isn't if the allegation is or isn't true. Of course it's entirely possible she is telling the truth and I am glad to see that authorities competent to investigate the allegation are involved rather than a committee made up of a few professors, students, and admins all of whom know the "verdict" before the "trial" starts. It's that the knee-jerk reaction of Duke is to suspend the entire fraternity, i.e., to presume organizational guilt by association, before anyone has even been charged much less named a suspect.
If a chemistry professor was accused of "breaking bad" for example and cooking meth in one of the college's labs at night when no one else was around, would it be appropriate to suspend the entire chemistry department's faculty from engaging in any chemistry department-related activities, excluding, say, just teaching classes? No more non-essential chemistry dept.-related activities, like going to conferences, etc.? Of course not! It'd be tatamount to punishing the entire dept., suggesting they were complicit in some way with the actions of their own version of "Heisenberg", but at least suggesting that chemistry-related anything itself is inherently dangerous -- sort of like what's happening here with relation to the *gasp* very notion that college men form associations with each other. (Hmm, where did I hear or read something about the right to associate, assemble, etc... oh yeah, all over the freaking place, that's where!) But I suppose if among some group of people it is suspected that one or more might have done something wrong, it's OK to just assume the entire lot of them has probably had something to do with that which has yet to be substantiated and so treat them presumptively like they did something wrong. In this case, it'd be suspending all chapter activities.
Again, men's colleges. Guys, go to men's colleges. This living in the lion's maw thing just ain't worth the grief...
sigh
not saying it never happens, but how much you wanna bet, that this is just another "man and woman both get drunk, have consensual relations, she wakes up, has regrets, cries "RAPE" " incidents we keep seeing more and more of?
"precaution"

yep.
when done to minorities, it's called "racism".
when done to men, it's called "precaution".
what utter BOLLOCKS!
very true e.l.
on a similar note I just found out that 33 rappers are under indictment for their music? cruising Drudge Report took me into that bag of worms. the state of California is trying to use the gang violence law against the people/artists who only sing about the violence. the rapper in the video made some good points, like why no women gang members arrested? I have to agree w/ the lawyers here. the state a.g.'s have overstepped by quietly including this little tidbit in the gang violence law that passed. the mention of the word gun in their music somehow violates the law as much as using the gun illegally does. doesn't pass the constitutional smell test.
I guess his continued argument about the 'eradication of black men' is something he and his alleged co-conspirators should take up w/ the a.g.'s bosses up the ladder?
