UK: False rape allegation led man to assault innocent bystander

Story here. Excerpt:

'AN innocent man was attacked because his clothes matched the description a woman had made-up about her alleged rapist.

Johnathan Smith’s ex-girlfriend told him she had been raped and gave a description of her supposed attacker of the man’s clothes.

Smith then attacked a man he saw in the same clothes but she admitted she had made up the allegation.

Smith left her house around 1am on January 12, went onto Carmarthen Road and Smith, from Penrhiw Road, in Morriston, saw his victim with two friends waiting at a bus stop.

As he approached, his friends ran away, leaving the victim alone and he then also ran off, but Smith used a pedal bike to chase after him.

Smith caught him and punched him, leaving him with a bloody nose.

“The defendant needs to understand that any decision he makes will have a reaction to other people and he must take into account their feelings and thoughts before he makes a decision to stand his ground or and try deal with matters outside the lawful way,” he said.

Chairman of the bench, Phil Llewellyn said: “Whatever the reason you had to be out at that time of the morning and to carry out the assault that you did, you didn’t think about it”.

He was given a 12 month community order and told to complete 100 hours of unpaid work.

He was also told to pay £200 compensation to the victim.'

... a female assailant would have had any kind of punishment at all. No lecture from the bench about self-control and taking responsibility, either.

But it isn't the first time a man or men haven't, based on the word of a female, gone vigilante on another guy in an act of nymphotropism, chivalry, or good old-fashioned p*ssy-begging. Another lesson learned (over and over again, so I guess it isn't learned): police exist for a reason, as does this thing called "due process" (when people actually get it, that is). Taking the law into your own hands is one of the faster ways to get into trouble with it.

But an even faster way is to knock over a liquor store in broad daylight just as a couple cops pull into the parking lot to do a quick inventory of their shotgun shells. =)
