Australia: Rape charge dropped as "new evidence" introduced
Story here. Excerpt:
'Ben Kooy, 34, was arrested last Wednesday and charged with dragging a 17-year-old girl off a train around 1pm and into a toilet block where he allegedly sexually assaulted her.
...
The Kellyville man was initially refused bail and spent four nights in custody but police found fresh evidence at the weekend and released him ahead of an appearance at Burwood Local Court on Wednesday.
The matter was adjourned for three weeks on Wednesday morning but later in the day the charge of sexual intercourse without consent was dismissed and an AVO* for the victim was withdrawn.
Mr Kooy's legal aid solicitor, Patricia Lyden, said fresh evidence ‘‘changed the situation dramatically’’. It is understood new footage discredited the girl’s story.
...
It is not clear if the girl will be charged with making false representations to police.
Friends said she gave several different stories of her ordeal. She told friends that she was on her way to her boyfriend’s house or on her way to college where she studies a business degree.'

*AVO: Apprehended Violence Order: "In the Australian State of New South Wales, a court may grant an apprehended violence order (AVO) to a person who fears violence, harassment, abuse, or stalking.[6] A court may issue an AVO if it believes, on the balance of probabilities, that a person has reasonable grounds to fear personal violence, harassing conduct, molestation, intimidation, or stalking. A defendant's non-compliance with the order may result in the imposition of a fine, imprisonment, or both."

I left out the 'http://' part of the URL for the link. I do that sometimes; usually I catch it before I put the story live but sometimes, especially late in the evening... oops. :)
no worries Matt - you should
no worries Matt - you should tell me how/what you use to format the articles as I am just using this.
Links
As far as URLs go, they always start with "http://". If like I did, you leave this prefix out, the link won't work. In anything on a web page that is supposed to have a link, the way to make it show as such is to use the standard URL format:
<a href="http://host/path/etc">link text</a>
Example:
<a href="http://www.yahoo.com/newsstuff/main.htm">Yahoo News (not)</a>
Not that that link actually goes anyplace, but it shows the format more tangibly.
If someone were to submit the link as shown above in a news story, it'd preview and save looking like this:
Yahoo News (not)
