'Among high school athletes, football players and female soccer players are most likely to injure their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), a new study finds.
Those injuries often require surgery and months of rehab, and can put young athletes at risk for arthritis years down the road.
...
The report confirms earlier findings that among boys and girls playing the same sport, girls have a higher risk of ACL injury. That could be due to differences in their build, muscle development or hormones.
But researchers said it's important to focus on ACL injury prevention for boys, too - especially because a high rate of injuries is seen among young football players.'

Heck yeah
Knew a few people in HS and college who did in their ACLs and were on crutches sometimes for weeks if it was bad enough. And it comes back later in life to bite-- again. With all the talk of concussions (and good that they're getting discussed, too), these other kinds of significant injuries shouldn't be ignored.
I wonder though, when it comes to movement-related non-contact injuries, just how much can you do? Run, jump, etc., and the risk must be there. Sit around, and you'll get fat and croak anyway.
Swimming. There's still swimming. As long as you don't drown. =)
ACL
One way not to get ACL injury is not to kick with the outside of your weaker foot.I got mine in 1952 when I was 15 and have never played since.I wore an elastic band for 2 years, the swelling went down but the weakness stayed.
Surgery then was dangerous and is still complicated but,it won't kill you and that's the risk everybody takes, male or female.Take my first point to heart and you may avoid the problem.
