Japan Airlines enhances Hawaii flights with new menu, women-only area

Story here. Excerpt:

'Japan Airlines is introducing new features and services on its flights to Honolulu, including a women-only area on the plane for applying make-up, or breast-feeding, as well as in-flight meals designed by celebrity chefs and Hawaii’s Kuaaina Sandwich Shop.

Japan Airlines said Monday that it will continue to seek ways to bring passengers unique and refreshing onboard experiences through more delectable meal choices.

The first installment of the in-flight meal changes will be available starting Sept. 1, on flights from Japan to Honolulu. Meals designed by chef Chikara Yamada will be available from the airline’s JAL Bedd Sky Auberge restaurant on business class flights from Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka to Honolulu. In the economy class on flights on the same routes, in-flight meals have been designed by Chef Kazuhide Nose of Ore-no French and Chef Yoshihiro Yamaura of Ore-no Italian.'

A private place to breastfeed and do none toilet stuff doesn't seem that unreasonable. men don't do ether of these things, nor anything I can think of other that would require a non-washroom privacy area. It's not like the meals are women only too.

That is, assuming it's not a huge luxury lounge type area.

There's already very limited space on commercial passenger planes. Creating a "special area" for women to do what, apply make-up??, is not an efficient use of scarce space. As for breastfeeding, again, how much would that get used? Set aside space for breastfeeding that goes unused 99+% of the time? And there are these wondrous inventions known as breast-pumps. Women in Japan and Hawaii have access to them. Simply pump breast-milk for baby before boarding. That simple.

This is just another no-men-allowed gimmick that will in the end make unpleasant experiences like flying in commercial jets even moreso. Besides, where does it end? Start with this and what's next? Women-only flights?

I agree with most of Matt comments. Applying make-up is a not a neccesary task. Breatfeeding, while it is a neccesary task, I doubt the space would get used much. I personally would prefer to nurse a baby in my seat with a blanket over me, rather than try and carry the baby to another area of the plane. However, I also believe babies should have thier own paid seats on planes which gives the mother a little more room and privacy.

Breast pumps are impractical, take up limited carry-on space, no way to keep milk refridgerated for freshness, then warm up to correct temp and so on. To pump before boarding a mother would have to nurse a baby for regular feeding which may take 30 minutes, then hand the baby to someone else while she gets her pump out, then pump for another 30 minuts for a feeding on the plane, store milk, wash pump, etc. I've never seen an appropriate place to use a breastpump at an airport. Basically if a breasfed baby gets hungry while flying, the baby will have to be nursed, there's no practical way around it.
