UK: Harriet Harman blasts "woeful" coverage of women's sports and “ridiculous” men-only clubs

'Women's sport is being held back by old-fashioned television coverage and “ridiculous” men-only sporting clubs, warned Harriet Harman.

She also slammed the inequality in funding for male and female sports and demanded equal prize money for men and women in sporting competitions.

The rallying cry from the Shadow Culture, Media and Sport Secretary came as British tennis hopeful Laura Robson tries to smash her way into the quarter-finals at Wimbledon today.

Ms Harman insisted that “woeful” broadcasting of female sports is holding back girls from doing sports at school and damaging the UK’s chances of producing the next generation of Olympic heroines, such as gold medallist Jessica Ennis.
...
Ms Harman also said it is time to end the antiquated loophole that allows men-only sports clubs, like Muirfield golf course.

She fumed: “We have clubs where women are only allowed in the company of a man. It is ridiculous and has absolutely no place in the 21st century.”'

... nets $10 million for the tourney producers and they offer $2 million in prizes, but if a women's tourney nets only $1 million, Ms Harmon insists that it pay out $2 million in prizes?

That's what economists call "an unsustainable business model".

Also, will ending men-only sports clubs include ending women-only ones, too?

It's understandable that men's sports has more coverage due to the fact it has been around longer. I agree with that there not as much coverage on a pro level but not on a college or intermediate level. It'll come but things take time and need a certain amount of interest by women to do it. There might be enough interest to start a WNHL and hopefully it'll happen soon and they'll be sharing the spotlight with men. Like I said it takes time for these things to happen and it's not something you can demand men to do on the spot. Not allowing men to have their own private club is sexism at its purest form. It reminds me of the Augustana debacle. It's frustrating to see that stuff on the news when there is no proof of women hating going on and you can tell the only reason feminists were going after them is because that private golf club in peticular was created when women were still oppressed. Men have the right to make a private men only club and not be called women haters in the media!
