Young women navigate through their probation

Article here. Excerpt:

'The purpose of the court-ordered program is to provide youth on probation with job-training skills and prepare them for reintegration into the community, said Charlie Johnson, program manager for the court program.

The project is designed to teach the young women skills and enhance their self-esteem and self-efficacy, learn how to work in a team environment, and improve their communication skills.

“We’re trying to build successful women, not really boats,” Mr. Johnson said.'

... there's an equivalent such program there for delinquent young men?

The article implies the program is gender neutral and in the example with the boat building, it says the supervisor of the boat building, Mr. Johnson, had only worked with boys until now.

Helping people with not so polished pasts is one of my passions. One of the biggest obstacle is the ability to find employment with a criminal past. My dad is a motivation speaker to men in prison and has helped find them employment, so I have been surrounded by this type of charity my whole life.

I am not sure how many of the girls will use boat building skills. I am a little concerned that the program is allowing them easy time when they are supposed to be punished. There should be a balance of punishment and rehabilitation. The goal should be to get them skills so they don't re-offend and can be productive members of society when they are released. Hopefully that is what is occurring.
