Comment: Christmas advertising addressing child abuse

Article here. Excerpt:

'We have received a small number of complaints about a fundraising advert currently running on public transport in London and the South East of England (below) that portrays a father as a perpetrator of child abuse.

Our advertising and awareness literature represents all kinds of abuse and all kinds of perpetrators of abuse - whether male or female, young or old - and we work hard to find the correct balance in our campaigns.

The advert above happened to talk about a man, but many others talk about women.'

I've had a bit of contact with fund raisers in child abuse related orgs. They can't really communicate the truth about who commits the majority of it. Many potential donors don't want to hear it.

I agree with what the company says, in that, so long as both sexes are portrayed as abusers, then they shouldn't get complaints... As to complain every time a man is called an abuser would leave only showing women as abusers, and that's no more rational, nor helpful, than only showing men as abusers. So as long as both sexes are portrayed as abusers (and they've shown at least two examples of mothers called out as abusers), I'm ok with that. What I'm a bit squeemish about is the fact that, in both mothers as abusers ads they provided, the fathers are in the picture and allowing it, they just don't care. So men are still not being portrayed as caring enough about their own kids.

But ultimately, this organization is portraying mothers as abusers, and that needs to be recognized.
