F&F: Battle for Alimony Reform Heats up in FL, CA

Article here. Excerpt:

'A Florida bill has been introduced to abolish lifetime alimony and clean up other abuses within the system, similar to the alimony reform bill recently passed in Massachusetts. One of Florida’s largest newspapers, the Orlando Sentinel, attacked the bill as a windfall for “wealthy men who cheat on their wives.”

Many Fathers and Families members have experienced the injustices of the current alimony system firsthand–we ask that you write a Letter to the Editor of the Sentinel by clicking here and/or comment on the bill here.

A Low-Rent Attack

Sentinel columnist Scott Maxwell employs anti-male stereotypes in his piece In new alimony bill, wealthy, cheating men could pay less, and informs us that the bill is “anti-woman,” ”unconstitutional,” “radical,” “Draconian,” etc. In a state where alimony obligors are often unable to retire at a normal age because they must continue to pay alimony, Maxwell is somehow unable to come up with any family law experts who like the bill.'

It often comes down to a perception of alimony as a form of punishment for rich men who cheat with women's groups. Saw it in the Arnold Schwarzenegger affair too. But these same women's groups suddenly lose the punishment mentality when it comes to ordinary men, at which point they claim it is simply a responsibility. And when it comes to cheating women, well, that never exists. After all, wouldn't the removal of taking adultery into account when determining alimony not help those cheating women? Judge could no longer say "you wrecked the marriage of your own volition, you don't get a dime". But somehow, this new bill helps rich men who cheat by making sure alimony isn't used as a punishment, but instead is applied when/where needed, and does not help women who cheat on rich husbands by making sure they can't be held accountable for their own part in the marriages breakdown.
