The unprecedented settlement of up to £220 million, agreed by Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky in his divorce from his second wife, Galina, represents the largest ever pay-out in the UK.
Although Mr Berezovsky settled the divorce award out of court, the size of the sum reflects the growing reputation of British courts for awarding generous settlements to the wives of rich men.
Last year, a Nigerian woman, Sikirat Agbaje managed to increase her settlement to £275,000, almost 10 times the original settlement awarded to her in a Nigerian court, after bringing her case to the High Court in London.
In April this year, Russian tycoon Ilva Golubovich was forced to pay his student wife Elena £2.8 million after their 18-month marriage ended. It was claimed by Mr Golubovich’s lawyers that she tried to file for divorce in Britain in an attempt to secure a larger settlement for herself and their two-year old daughter, while he sought to have the marriage formally ended in Russia, where payouts are far lower.

Sir Mark Potter, one of the judges who upheld the award in the Charman case, said the English courts’ emphasis on equality in settlements had fuelled the growing number of wives travelling to the UK to seek divorces from their wealthy husbands.'

Yes indeed, control the men through the women, works every time. To stop the venom of the snake from poisoning anything else one must remove the head. If we truly want equality we need to rule ourselves. Self rule, one vote, one Citizen. Until we step up and take back our birth right we will take whatever the elite deem is ours no matter how small or perverse.

I notice the "landmark case" for pre-nups (last few paragraphs) describes a situation where a pre-nup was upheld when it was a man who would stand to gain from nulling it. Brittan is well known for it's breaking pre-nups, but apparently only if it benefits a woman?
