Married men earn a third more than their single counterparts

Article here. Excerpt:

'Married men earn nearly one third more than single males because they work harder, new research reveals.

Tying the knot means men get paid seven per cent more than unmarried men even if differences in age, education and experience are taken into account.

Experts say the pay gap could be because men develop a stronger work ethic after they marry.
...
Results indicate that a lower level of pay satisfaction induces married men to put more effort into their work, which leads to higher wages,’ said academics at the University of Bielefeld in Germany.'

Anyways, the reason I posted this article is because I wanted to show that men work many (extra) hours out of obligation and responsibility, not because they simply want to make it to the top.

If most men just wanted to make it to the top because they loved the competitive atmosphere they would work longer hours as single men, without families to distract them. Obviously this is not the case.

The problem I see is that men start a family, which then pushes them further from the home even though they have more reasons to be at home.

Sure if you have a family then anything a man earns has to be spread around. Single men may earn less but they get to keep it all. On the other hand married men get to keep only a small part of his earnings and may be not even that.
