Dallas Craigslist Job Listing: Women-Only Office Assistants

I haven't yet come across a job listing on Craigslist for a networking specialist that requires the applicant to be a young man. But one cosmetic surgeon in Dallas, TX openly states that the position can only be filled by a young woman.

"Dallas cosmetic surgeon/ Med Spa Medical Director needs a part time assistant for office as well as personal assistance. Our atmosphere and type of clientele requires the applicant to be an attractive and polished young lady with a professional and sweet demeanor."

Yes, this is very sexist. But it hurts both women and men.

It is no secret that in the private offices of most physicians, dentist, etc they prefer and value a woman's looks and therefor no older than 35. Sometimes this is only for the front office, but it often extends to the nursing staff and back office as well.

I wonder if this just feeds the ego of the business owner or if it really effects a client's opinion of the office and staff.

Isn't this ad basically a public confession, "we do not abide by equal opportunity laws".

I contacted the poster of this ad, and let him/her know that the ad violated the discrimination laws. I was very polite, suggesting that they change the ad. They wrote back thanking me, and they have since gone on to change the ad. Although the changes are more a matter of changing a requirement into an option (they still mention a young woman), they did take action in response to a polite email. Perhaps we should be complaining less, and taking action more?
