Common-law wife charged in man's slaying

Story here. Excerpt:

'EDMONTON -- A man found dead in his Edmonton home Sunday was stabbed to death, say police, who've now charged his common-law wife with second-degree murder.

Results of an autopsy completed Tuesday revealed that Rodney Petryk, 44, was fatally stabbed.

Police were called to Petryk's 12245 93 St. house just before midnight Sunday and found him dead.

Neighbours said officers had been to the residence several times before.'

Once again the prosecutors are getting "nice" with the woman (chivalry in another form). A man who committed such a crime would probably be charged with first degree murder (premeditation), but this woman is only charged with second degree murder (heat of the moment intent to kill, but not premeditation). Somebody (NCFM?) needs to do more surveys to show how biased prosecutors are when they choose to charge women versus when they choose to charge men. We have some surveys reflecting the marked disparity in prison sentences between the sexes (for the same crime), but we need more surveys revealing the charging-for-crimes disparity between the sexes. Here is one of these surveys, reflecting the gender difference in court processing of felony charges:

We also need better publicity about these significant gender preferences, ideally laws to prohibit such gender differentials.

what would you propose for cracking down on that? Make equal application of the law in light of gender part of their training. Have some way of setting more standard sentencing (minimums and maximums)? Or put pressure and penalties for courts proven to discriminate?
