'How could a mother eat her own baby?': Answer: It's her baby-daddy's fault

Article here. Keep your barf-bucket handy. Excerpt:

'The case of Otty Sanchez is shocking and gruesome. But it's also a cautionary tale about how we treat new mothers
...
How is it that Buchholz has known Sanchez for six years, lived with her, and had a baby with her, as the AP reports, but professes to be unaware until last week that she had been diagnosed as schizophrenic?

Since Buchholz himself is schizophrenic, currently on a six-drug daily regimen, this does not seem like something Sanchez would be too embarrassed to share with him. Maybe she did mention it, but he forgot? Or perhaps he was in denial, dismissing her behavior as "baby blues" or simple "bitchiness"?'

It's a tough call for me to decide if the author of this article is looking for an explanation, or if they are looking for blame. I like to hope that it is for an explanation, but really the point is moot, as I don't believe anyone could have seen this coming.

In all fairness, they mention several people in the timeline that led to the horrific event; from the longtime boyfriend (father of the child), to the hospital staff who released her, and also the woman's sister, who was the last one to hand the baby back to the woman.

If you read the whole article, I don't see the author pointing to the boyfriend any more or less than anyone else.

As far as taking children away from parents involuntary, it is a tough call for me. I have a lot to say about it because I was taken away from my birth mother, which later proved to save my life. Her neglect caused the death of my siblings (I have no recollection as I was adopted when I was 3).

On the other hand, I do not want children taken away because police or social workers do not like a parent's choice of discipline or a breastfeeding mother takes cold medicine or whatever.

There needs to be a balance of protecting children from unfit parents, but not allowing the government to dictate parenting style or encroach on parental rights. Sometimes that line is hard to see.

I would like to know more details about her schizophrenia diagnosis and how the doctor was treating her. Most people with schizophrenia also have drug/alcohol problems and dysfunctional lifestyles. It would be hard for one schizo (the boyfriend) to recognize 'unusual' signs in another schizo (the mother).

To me it seems that the mental health care system failed her. I also think that she may have given her baby up voluntarily if she were asked, since she did previously give the baby to her sister because she was worried about her mental state.

Feminists hate this for all the wrong reasons. Feminists believe in abortion 'on demand' and cringe at the fact that a fetus survived. They don't believe a fetus is a human life and deserve no rights. Tell that to the newest member of the human race. I hope the baby survives.

Let me go a step further. I think feminists want this baby to die. If a fetus dies, it validates their belief an unborn child has no legal or moral right to live.

The article seems to be about exonerating not just this woman- who does seem to be genuinely insane- but also all the other psycho women who kill children. The writer goes as far as to claim that Smith and Yates were acting out of love, and at the end she points out that in the UK infanticide by the mother is automatically reduced to manslaughter as if she would like the US to do the same thing. I wonder if she feels this way about men who kill their children? Lets guess...
