Taiwan: More women-only gyms

Story here. Excerpt:

"MOVE over, guys, women-only gyms are getting bigger and better. Amore Fitness, which has 16 outlets islandwide, is planning to open a new 1,393 sq m fitness centre at City Square Mall at the end of the year.

Amore's founder and chief executive, Ms Jasmine Teo, says its gyms have 50,000 active members to date, with numbers 'constantly growing'.

Gyms like Amore not only have fitness regimes and classes tailored for a woman's physique, but also have less bulky fitness equipment and luxurious vanity areas where members can primp and preen after their workouts.

Ms Cordelia Fernandez, a junior-college teacher in her 30s, dropped 9kg in eight months after she joined womenonly gym Slender Shapes in 2002.

'The main advantage of women- only gyms is that there are no distractions,' she said. 'You can concentrate on working out without worrying about how your hair looks or if you have a visible panty line.'"

Well then by all means, create a sex-segregated environment! I mean, sheesh, they do it all the time in countries that are under Sharia law and look, no human rights issues there, no ma'am! Yes indeedy, the principle that it is fine to exclude people from access to services based solely on their sex because one of the parties in question might be worried about her looks, well, that is just fine.

Hey, has anyone ever stopped to mention, in all this women-only gyms thing, that a lot of gyms have both women-only locations and co-ed facilities? So what this means is that, basically, male members are paying for upkeep and services for, say, 5 facilities, while only be allowed access to 2 or 3. Take these people for example: Two co-ed locations and three women-only locations. Now, I have to kinda wonder, do the women-only locations generate enough revenue to sustain themselves? If not, then who do you suppose is subsidizing them? Answer: You guessed it!

No wonder they open so many women-only gyms. For starters, I'll bet women are a lot more likely to buy a membership but never use it. Second, women are almost certainly more likely to buy tanning sessions, fake tanning lotions, gym apparel and whatever other crap they flog.
Where I live, there is a chain of gyms called Curves, which caters to fat women. What a brilliant idea! Man, I'll bet they sell a million memberships but the gyms are deserted.

Anyone who is distracted from their workout by worrying about their hair shouldn't be allowed in a gym.

"...a lot of gyms have both women-only locations and co-ed facilities?"

I live in a large city, but I do not know of any health clubs that have both female only and co-ed locations. Does anyone know of any? If the claim is true, then you certainly bring up a good point about men subsidizing the cost to operate the female only locations.

As I am writing this, I re-read Scottie's post and realized that he did provide a link to a club that has both. Is anyone familiar with this club?

I am wondering if you can only use the facility that you join at. If so it would de-bunk the notion that men are subsidizing women's clubs. I am not doubting or arguing, I am just trying to get down to the truth of the matter. At the Gold's Gym in my area they recently changed their policy about being able work out at any location. The reason is because different locations have different owners and different amenities. People were joining at one location, but using another.

If male only or female only clubs are both legal, I really do not have any problem with it. However, the men should not have to subsidize the female clubs.

Every female only club I have been to has been lame. Curves takes the cake! My Grandmother dragged me there as they cater to old and fat women (my grandma is not fat, but she is old).

Side note on CURVES: One of my family's businesses is owning commercial property including strip malls. CURVES is a tenant at two locations. The owners have indicated that the franchise is not as financially profitable as it was a few years ago. They are having trouble and one of the locations may shut down. Bad news for us, as it is hard to get a new tenant in this economy, but I thought you guys might like to know.

Examples of female gyms with 'co-ed' sections might be few. There are however many mixed gyms and many female gyms. What you will find hard to come across are men only gyms.
