Sotomayor defends her membership in elite all-women's club

Story here. Excerpt:

'WASHINGTON – Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor is defending her membership in an elite all-women's club, telling senators the group doesn't discriminate unfairly by gender and involves men in many of its activities.

Her explanation came in a letter submitted Monday evening to the Senate Judiciary Committee, which also included copies of several rulings, briefs and speeches the judge had not previously given the panel.

GOP senators had requested the material and questioned Sotomayor's membership in the Belizean Grove, a group of prominent professional women, because federal judges are bound by a code that says they shouldn't join any organization that discriminates by race, sex, religion, or nationality.'

..."because federal judges are bound by a code that says they shouldn't join any organization that discriminates by race, sex, religion or nationality." she should be turfed out - It's pretty damn clear. As for involving men she no doubt means that their waiters and butlers are men, which is how they like it.

Hi,

I'm currently running for a judicial position in NY State. I thought I'd take this opportunity to offer an overview of my qualifications and beliefs.

I'm a graduate of an Ivy League university and even though my grades were sub par, I was admitted as a part of an affirmative action program for white men.

I also believe my experience as a white man gives me a unique understanding that a Latino woman doesn't possess. I've made these comments at least nine different times over the years and stand by my beliefs.

I'm also a member of a men's only club. We do allow women to serve us lunch and the wives are invited to certain events, but hold no managerial positions. Up to this point, no woman has ever applied.

One of my most proud cases involves a firefighter test. The promotional exam was offered to men and women but only minorities did well. In fact, no white men qualified for the promotion. I felt, because no white men passed, the test should be thrown out. Because the test was inclusive, the minorities who aced the exam are out of luck.

I hope this gives you a concise overview of my ideology and opinions.

Cheers!!

:}
