Passing exams could be child's play for boys
Article here. Excerpt:
'Leading academics and policymakers have pondered long and hard about the problem of how to overcome the poor performance of boys at school.
Now it seems, according to new research published today, the answer may be quite simple – just get them to play more games and the exam passes could take care of themselves.
A study of 508 independent schools by the Independent Schools Council (ISC) reveals for the first time that there is a strong link between the amount of voluntary activities such as chess and cricket undertaken by children and their exam performance. Pupils in the top-performing schools for GCSE results took part, on average, in 50 per cent more activities than those schools at the bottom of the performance ladder. In addition, the research found, the difference in performance was more marked in boys-only schools.'

Good article. It is saying
Good article. It is saying students that participate in competitive activities do better in school. I could have told you that.
The article doesn't mention this, but think about how most schools have a grade requirement to 'qualify' for school activities. Some high schools insist athletes carry a 'B' average. This is absurd and mostly effects boys.
The students that are failing classes an/or who are at risk for dropping out, are denied the activities that might help them in school and be the one thread that keeps them enrolled.
The father of my kids was denied playing sports for one year in high school because of academics. Even though he switched schools 10 times before high school and suffered from an abusive household. He would have dropped out of school, if it wasn't for a coach that fought for him (and later adopted him).
This is similar to teachers punishing boys by denying them recess or PE for not being able to sit still in class. Don't they see the irony?
I'm glad the article mentions the fact that boys need sports and competition, but I wish the author would realize that boys are denied these things much more than girls are.
It is quite good article.
It is quite good article. Actually it motivates the students to participate in competitive activities in school. Thanks for sharing.

You know, I've gotten so
You know, I've gotten so tired of all the government-funded education organizations doing next-to-nothing about the boy crisis that I decided years ago I would independently try to solve this problem. I'm now working on an internet-based system (it's hard to explain all this here) which will essentially allow teachers to structure their classes in such a way to motivate boys. I've already seen it work in a number of class rooms, heck, I was taught by a variant of this learning system myself. Once I finish my teaching and biochemistry/biology degrees, I'm going to begin trialling this properly at boy's high schools. If it works, then I'll spread it across the country.
Step One
Finding these answers is the easy part, it's getting the male-hating bastards in power to implement them that's the problem.
