UK Telegraph: "Why is Hollywood going for bloke?"

Article here. Excerpt:

"Casting your eyes over this year's roster of film award contenders, you'd be forgiven for wondering why women, more than ever, have been relegated to the margins. The stories Hollywood wanted to tell last year were about fathers and sons, the American west, and machismo run amok.
...
Where are this year's The Queen, Erin Brockovich, Far From Heaven, The Hours? Even this year's Chicago? Oscar-watchers can only point to the best picture nominees Atonement and Juno as examples of female-led cinema, and neither of these will quite do.
...
It does seem that Hollywood has been overwhelmingly working out maleness issues, rather than feminine ones - whether it's rampant capitalism (There Will Be Blood, Michael Clayton) or essays on violence (No Country For Old Men, Jesse James) or paeans to male solitude (Into the Wild)."

So did he ask the same question only with the sexes reversed last year when 3 out of 4 major movies were centered around women or feminine themes?

The answer is simple: Hollywood does it in order not to go bust. It turned out that there are very few viewers (even among females) who is interested in seeing movies about "women studies" issues.

Single men is the only social group benefited from feminism.

These two movies are outstanding! I've seen them both and its American cinema at its best.

["There Will Be Blood" and "No Country For Old Men"]

The writer speaks about fathers and sons and we all know these type of movies are a dime a dozen in Hollywood???

This guy probably cries every time he watches Thelma and Louise and Dirty Dancing.

Whats his next topic? Misogynistic soap operas?

I don't even the see the point of that article being written. So most of the oscar nominees are films which deal with male problems. Big deal! Like there isn't a whole barrage of films that deal with female problems. And usually when they do, they try to glorify violence against men. I'm glad to see the trend in films is starting to reverse.

I think that alot of people really are not into seeing "macho" women that can kick ass. In real life these women do not exist. Yes, movies are fantasy but, a little bit of realism is nice in a movie. For me, a woman that is more macho than a male is a turn off. i think that's the same for most people.

Ever since the towers fell in NYC, feminists have been complaining about a wicked revival of masculinity.

Too many "firefighters" (read - fireMEN) and policepersons (read - policeMEN) dying heroically revealed that women are largely uninterested in the "helping professions" where death is a very real risk.

The dearth of "chick flicks" may indicate a social trend, or just Hollywood seeking new bank and it will swing back the other way next year.

Ridley Scott has threatened to make sequels to both Blade Runner and Thelma & Louise --

which is a pretty funny indication of social bi-polar disorder on the gender wars.

They still have the horror movie genre, where every male is killed or the killer, and every protagonist is a female.

They have chick flicks left and right. 27 Dresses is the latest one. However, it takes about four of them to pull in the same revenue as a Batman or 300. Is there a pattern here?

PS. This captcha sucks. Never use one that is case sensitive...or uses spaces?
