'Calling violence against women "as American as apple pie," Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI), testified on behalf of the Violence Against Women Act which would would renew grants to U.S. domestic violence prevention and survivor support programs, would increase availability of legal assistance to victims and would extend assistance to battered undocumented immigrants and same-sex couples.'

'I’m no fan of “father’s rights” attorneys. I think that they are just marketers who prey on the fears of Dads (or in some case Moms) who are worried about losing their kids or not seeing them as much as they want.
Despite me cringing when I hear one of these Dad’s rights commercials, there is a law that really screws some fathers that needs to be changed.
In Illinois, if you sign the birth certificate to a child and don’t reverse that within 75 days of doing so, you are legally the Dad. That’s it. So if your wife sleeps with her boss and gets pregnant (as happened to a recent caller to my office), and you sign the birth certificate, you are on the hook for child support for that kid. If you get a paternity test later on that shows you aren’t the father, you are out of luck.

Story here. (About Jackie Mason.) Excerpt:
'It was no laughing matter for Jackie Mason.
The elderly stand-up comedian called cops early today after he and a gal pal got into a tiff in his apartment and he wound up scratched on his arm, law-enforcement sources said.
The 48-year-old woman, Kaoru Suzuki- McMullen, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault.
Mason, who cops said is 83, was at his W. 57th St. apartment with Suzuki-McMullen, who they described as his girlfriend, at 6:30 a.m. when they got into an argument, according to law-enforcement sources.
Mason wanted her to leave, and he grabbed his cellphone to call the doorman, the sources said.
Suzuki-McMullen tried to take the phone from his hands, and he suffered scratches and bruises on his left wrist in the struggle, sources said.'

Article here. Interesting case. My own commentary is in the Comments section. Excerpt:
'NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Shelby County mother is facing contempt-of-court charges and possible jail time for baptizing her two children without the knowledge or consent of her ex-husband.
This week the Tennessee Court of Appeals said Lauren Jarrell must face a criminal contempt hearing for violating a court order that said major decisions regarding the religious upbringing of her two children should be made jointly with her-ex-husband.
The mother and her ex-husband, Blake Jarrell, are both Christian — he’s a Methodist and she’s a Presbyterian.
Court records say the father thought the children should be baptized once they are older. He has asked that his ex-wife be found in criminal contempt for baptizing the children without his knowledge or permission.'

Story here. Excerpt:
'LUFKIN, Texas - A former Texas nurse accused of killing five of her patients and injuring five others by injecting bleach into their kidney dialysis tubing was found guilty of capital murder Friday.
Kimberly Clark Saenz, 38, was fired in April 2008 after a rash of illnesses and deaths at a Lufkin dialysis clinic run by Denver-based health care giant DaVita Inc. She was charged a year later.
Her trial began March 5. Defense lawyers argued that Saenz was being targeted by the clinic's owner for faulty procedures at the facility, including improper water purification. They also suggested that officials at the clinic, about 125 miles northeast of Houston, fabricated evidence against Saenz. Prosecutors described claims Saenz was being set up by her employer as "absolutely ridiculous."
The mother of two now faces life in prison or a death sentence as the case moved to the punishment phase. Prosecutors had said they would seek the death penalty if Saenz was convicted.'

'At least 30% of Massachusetts representatives and senators are currently sponsors of proposed shared parenting legislation. If you live in their district, please call them or email their office.
First, thank them for backing the one solution that prominent and respected experts in child development have shown through research that children ardently desire; makes them happier; improves their schooling; decreases delinquency, gang violence and trouble with the law; decreases substance abuse and teen pregnancy; increases child support compliance; diminishes parental conflict and domestic violence; and has been endorsed by 86% of Massachusetts voters in a 2004 ballot referendum. It is not only free to the taxpayer, but would actually save millions of dollars.

Report here. Cruelty as you can see is an equal opportunity employer. As sad as this is, I have heard of much worse, and the perps have come from both sets of the sexes. I can't help but think they would have been a lot slower to act this way had the child been female. Excerpt:
'wo Alabama teachers were caught cruelly taunting and abusing a 10-year-old boy who has celebral palsy after the boy’s mother attached an audio recorder to his wheelchair.
The shocking recording captures two voices chiding Jose Salinas for his ‘disgusting’ drooling and reveals he was left alone with no instruction for long periods of time.
'Why is my paper wet?' a female teacher is heard demanding on the tape. 'Look at me and answer. That's not an answer. That's not even a word.'
...
'Do you seen anybody else at this table drooling? Then, stop,' she said. 'You have got drool all over your face and it is gross.'

Article here. Interesting comments from the judge on the emotional ramifications for all involved including the victim's actual children. Excerpt:
'A mother who conned a former lover into thinking he was the father of her daughter for more than 13 years has been jailed.
The 47-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, swindled him out of at least £48,700 which went on private education and expensive gifts.
She admitted 15 offences of deception when she appeared at Caernarfon Crown Court, in north Wales, yesterday.
And despite a plea for leniency from her daughter, the judge told her he had no choice but to jail her for 20 months.'

'A 12-year-old British girl dared a boy to rape her 11-year-old friend, laughed while it was happening and then yelled "no you're not finished," when he tried to stop, a court heard.
Leeds Crown Court heard the girl instigated the attack, which took place in her bedroom on October 2010, by suggesting a game of dare that quickly got out of hand, the Daily Mail reports.
Judge Geoffrey Marson sentenced the 12-year-old and the 14-year-old boy to 28 months detention in a young offender institution.
...
He said that after daring the boy to rape her friend, the 12-year-old pushed her onto the bed.
The boy stopped raping the 11-year-old when the victim told him to, prompting the bully to yell, "No you're not finished," but he ignored her.
Defender Richard Reed said the 12-year-old came from a troubled background and had difficulty empathising with the victim's situation.'

The last four chief executives of IBM - a longtime corporate sponsor of the Masters - have been members of the exclusive golf club in Augusta. The latest CEO of the computer giant happens to be a woman. Virginia Rometty was appointed this year.
One problem - a woman has never worn a member's green jacket since Augusta National opened in 1933.
"I think they're both in a bind," Martha Burk said recently. Burk, who spearheaded an unsuccessful campaign 10 years ago for the club to admit a female member, told CNN on Friday that she fears Augusta and IBM will work out a "sham solution" to make the issue go away.

'New research surprises by showing that vaginal injuries are just as common after regular intercourse as after a rape. The findings could have great implications for forensic investigations into rape cases.
When police officers around the world investigate rape cases, an important type of evidence is whether or not the woman has lesions in her vagina. If she does, it is regarded as a sign that there has been an assault. There have been cases where men have been convicted, based on vaginal injuries as the key evidence.
...
Now a Danish researcher has obtained solid evidence that injuries to a woman’s vagina can provide a totally misleading picture of whether or not a woman has been raped. An in-depth study of 39 rape victims on one side and 110 nursing students on the other reveals that voluntary sex causes vaginal injuries just as frequently as in rapes.'

Story here. She only got 29 months and 10 years' probation for drugging and raping a 13 year old boy. If a man had given a 13 year girl (well, nowadays any female of any age) alcohol and drugs then had sex with her, he would never see the light of day. Excerpt:
'Former Massachusetts teacher Christine McCallum was sentenced to 29 months in prison and 10 years probation for raping and drugging a 13-year-old student.
McCallum, 29, was arrested in January 2009 and convicted of raping the boy up to 300 times over a 21-month period. She pleaded guilty to 12 counts of child rape, one count of drugging a person for sex and one count of providing alcohol to a minor, according to Enterprise.
The former Abington elementary school educator started tutoring her victim and his 11-year-old brother in 2005, FOX 25 reported. After a 20-month period, the two boys started living with McCallum and her husband part-time.'
