ACLU targets single-sex education

Article here. Excerpt:

'The American Civil Liberties Union on Monday issued a report to the Department of Education asserting that numerous single-sex education programs in public schools are unlawful. Furthermore, the report calls for the department to rescind its regulations enabling these single-sex education programs.
...
Critics of the ACLU’s position leaped to the defense of single-sex education. Christina Hoff Sommers, Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and author of “The War Against Boys: How Misguided Feminism Is Harming Our Young Men,” denounced the report in an interview with the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“I think it’s seriously misguided,” said Sommers. “What the ACLU’s doing is foreclosing on possibilities for programs that will help children — especially boys — who are languishing in school … the ACLU may not like it, but boys and girls are different.”

Why Some Women Will Never Be Happy With Proof of Equality

Article here. Excerpt:

'Few topics stir up more heated debate than how women fare in the workforce. Bloomberg columnist Ramesh Ponnuru recently took on this issue, soberly detailing research that shows discrimination isn't the primary reason why men continue to out-earn women.

As Ponnuru explains, some politicians and activists continue to use the statistic that women earn just 77 per cent of what men earn, implying that this is the gap that exists between your average male and female coworkers. But in fact, once factors such as occupation choice and hours worked are taken into account, just a small fraction of that gap remains.

It's not just conservatives who reach this conclusion: Studies by the American Association of University Women and the General Accounting Office have found the same. Researchers vary on how much of a gap lingers after controlling for men and women's different choices, but there's a near consensus that a large portion of that 77-cents-on-the-dollar gap has nothing to do with workplace discrimination.'

German Rabbi faces Charges for 'Religious Circumcisions'

Article here.

'David Goldberg has been the rabbi of the Bavarian city of Hof since the last 1990s. He is a mohel (ritual circumciser) who has performed approximately 3,000 circumcisions since being trained to do so. However, there is a new curve in the road: less than two months ago a German court "banned religious circumcisions" and Goldberg now faces a criminal complaint over the most recent circumcisions he performed.

Jewish leaders throughout the world have taken the news of the complaint against Goldberg with stunned disbelief. And Moseh Kantor, president of the European Jewish Congress, said: "It has been many decades since a Jew was charged for practicing Judaism openly and is reminiscent of far darker times. We hope that in Germany, of all places, the authorities would remain far more sensitive to this issue."

Postpartum psychosis: Affected parents speak out

Article here. Excerpt:

'Women are more at risk of severe mental illness after giving birth than at any other time in their lives.

In the worst cases it can lead to postpartum psychosis, also known as puerperal psychosis, a mental illness which affects one in 500 new mothers and can result in suicide or them killing their baby.

BBC Newsnight has spoken to people affected by this devastating but poorly understood condition, which often goes undetected because doctors and midwives can fail to recognise the symptoms.
...

"I put my hand around his tiny neck, not yet strong enough to hold up his own head, and began to squeeze. I wasn't trying to harm him. I knew I mustn't do that, but I wanted to know if I was capable of it."

Jo knew something was badly wrong, but she was too scared to seek help because she thought her children would be taken away from her.

Without treatment she became sicker and began planning how to kill both herself and her two young sons.'

The demise of U.S. males in sports

Article here. Excerpt:

'Much of the blame in the demise of Olympic sports programs in the United States has been the federal government’s push of Title IX regulations that have led to “quota queens” that mandate more sports for women than men, and men are being told they cannot play sports.

Zimbabwe: Clinton Hails Legislators' Circumcision

Article here. Excerpt:

'Washington, DC, Usa — United States Secretary of State Mrs Hillary Clinton has lauded 40 Zimbabwean parliamentarians who recently underwent voluntary male circumcision.

She described the team as true leaders who should be applauded for their role in the HIV and Aids fight.

Addressing 20 000 delegates gathered here for the XIX International Aids Conference, Mrs Clinton said Zimbabwean lawmakers were a good example of political leadership's commitment in the HIV and Aids management.

She said they supported more than 400 000 male circumcision procedures since last December alone and hoped to do more through different grants.

". . .We want the world to know that this procedure reduces the risk of female-to-male transmission by more than 60 percent and for the rest of the man's life, so the impact can be phenomenal.

"In Zimbabwe, some male lawmakers wanted to show their constituents how safe and virtually painless the procedure is, so they went to a mobile clinic and got circumcised.'

3,000 Malawian men cut off their foreskins: Less cervical cancer, reduces Aids risks

Article here. Excerpt:

'Malawian cancer expert at the country’s sole certified oncology unit at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QUECH) has asked authorities to consider exploring possibilities of using medical male circumcision as a measure of reducing cases of cervical cancer in women.

The country’s lone oncologist, Dr Leo Masamba told the Malawi News Agency (Mana) that though no research has been conducted locally, there are theoretical linkages between the HIV virus and the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which is one of the major causes of cervical cancer in women.

Dr Masamba’s sentiments come at a time when more men are willingly to go for certified medial male circumcision since its endorsement by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a means of reducing HIV infection in 2007.'

Seneca Falls woman accused of raping 14-year-old boy

Article here. Ironically, the same Seneca Falls that is heralded as the "Birthplace of Women's Rights" (though I rather think a lot of ideas around their issues pre-dated the Seneca Falls convention by many years). Thankfully those rights don't include statutory rape-- at least not some of the time. Excerpt:

'A Seneca Falls woman has been accused of having sex with a 14-year-old boy after allegedly allowing him to drink alcohol.

Dawn R. Planty, 45, was charged Monday with second-degree rape, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree unlawfully dealing with a child, both misdemeanors, according to the Seneca Falls Police Department.

The incident occurred in Seneca Falls, officers said. Further details were not released.

Planty was arraigned in Seneca Falls Village Court and was remanded to the Seneca County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.'

Class of '16 sees men as 'dumb and dumber'

Article here. I guess this is what happens when you feed them a steady diet of pop culture and anti-male TV commercials, all without telling them who invented all the electronics they use, the cars they ride in, the houses the live in, the schools they go to, etc., etc. Excerpt:

'The students are also accustomed to seeing women in position of leadership. They came of age at a time when Madeleine Albright was serving as the first female U.S. secretary of state, and women have held the position for most of their lives.

And the old Hollywood stereotype of ditzy blonde women has given way to one of "dumb and dumber males," according to the list.

"In general, there was always the complaint that it was too slow for women to get to positions of responsibility," said Ron Nief, one of the two Beloit College officials who compiles the list. "Now the question is, `What took so long?'"'

Petition: Stop Sexism in The Affordable Care Act

Petition here. Excerpt:

'Now that men and women pay equally for healthcare, shouldn't men receive equal coverage when it comes to fully covered services? Shouldn't there finally be a government health office dealing with men's health? Men and women should sign this petition no matter if they agree with the Affordable Care Act or not. The Act is sexist and needs to be made unbiased should it remain in existence in its present state. (Since Change.org seems to have cropped my original top photo to remove all resemblence of what it was supposed to portray, the chart shows govt. funding for cancer by gender (millions of $) 2009. The first bar graph is for the National Institute of Health and the second bar graph is the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).)
