Zimbabwe: Clinton Hails Legislators' Circumcision

Article here. Excerpt:

'Washington, DC, Usa — United States Secretary of State Mrs Hillary Clinton has lauded 40 Zimbabwean parliamentarians who recently underwent voluntary male circumcision.

She described the team as true leaders who should be applauded for their role in the HIV and Aids fight.

Addressing 20 000 delegates gathered here for the XIX International Aids Conference, Mrs Clinton said Zimbabwean lawmakers were a good example of political leadership's commitment in the HIV and Aids management.

She said they supported more than 400 000 male circumcision procedures since last December alone and hoped to do more through different grants.

". . .We want the world to know that this procedure reduces the risk of female-to-male transmission by more than 60 percent and for the rest of the man's life, so the impact can be phenomenal.

"In Zimbabwe, some male lawmakers wanted to show their constituents how safe and virtually painless the procedure is, so they went to a mobile clinic and got circumcised.'

3,000 Malawian men cut off their foreskins: Less cervical cancer, reduces Aids risks

Article here. Excerpt:

'Malawian cancer expert at the country’s sole certified oncology unit at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QUECH) has asked authorities to consider exploring possibilities of using medical male circumcision as a measure of reducing cases of cervical cancer in women.

The country’s lone oncologist, Dr Leo Masamba told the Malawi News Agency (Mana) that though no research has been conducted locally, there are theoretical linkages between the HIV virus and the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which is one of the major causes of cervical cancer in women.

Dr Masamba’s sentiments come at a time when more men are willingly to go for certified medial male circumcision since its endorsement by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a means of reducing HIV infection in 2007.'

Pro tennis umpire charged with husband’s murder

Story here. Excerpt:

'As an umpire for decades on some of tennis's biggest stages, Lois Goodman mixed it up with John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova, Roger Federer and the Williams Sisters.

Already in New York City for next week's U.S. Open where she was to serve as a line judge, the 70-year-old Goodman was met Tuesday with a felony arrest warrant from her hometown of Los Angeles, where police and prosecutors say she beat her 80-year-old husband to death with a coffee mug in April.

Goodman has been a line judge at the U.S. Open for many years and was scheduled to work at this year's tournament, which begins Monday, and was about to begin working the tournament's qualifying matches on Tuesday, said tournament spokesman Tim Curry, who had no further comment.'

Russian woman kills elderly neighbor with her bra

Story here. Excerpt:

'MOSCOW (AP) -- Russian investigators say a woman in East Siberia has strangled an elderly neighbor to death with her bra.

The Investigative Committee in Buryatia said in a statement on Tuesday that the 26-year-old woman from the town of Zakamensk, just miles north off the border with Mongolia, has been charged with murder.

Investigators say the woman was drunk on a July evening when she and her boyfriend called on their 65-year-old neighbor for money to buy drinks. Angry that he refused to lend them money, the woman punched him in the face and tried to strangle him with her hands, before taking off her bra and strangling him with it, they say.'

Seneca Falls woman accused of raping 14-year-old boy

Article here. Ironically, the same Seneca Falls that is heralded as the "Birthplace of Women's Rights" (though I rather think a lot of ideas around their issues pre-dated the Seneca Falls convention by many years). Thankfully those rights don't include statutory rape-- at least not some of the time. Excerpt:

'A Seneca Falls woman has been accused of having sex with a 14-year-old boy after allegedly allowing him to drink alcohol.

Dawn R. Planty, 45, was charged Monday with second-degree rape, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree unlawfully dealing with a child, both misdemeanors, according to the Seneca Falls Police Department.

The incident occurred in Seneca Falls, officers said. Further details were not released.

Planty was arraigned in Seneca Falls Village Court and was remanded to the Seneca County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.'

Class of '16 sees men as 'dumb and dumber'

Article here. I guess this is what happens when you feed them a steady diet of pop culture and anti-male TV commercials, all without telling them who invented all the electronics they use, the cars they ride in, the houses the live in, the schools they go to, etc., etc. Excerpt:

'The students are also accustomed to seeing women in position of leadership. They came of age at a time when Madeleine Albright was serving as the first female U.S. secretary of state, and women have held the position for most of their lives.

And the old Hollywood stereotype of ditzy blonde women has given way to one of "dumb and dumber males," according to the list.

"In general, there was always the complaint that it was too slow for women to get to positions of responsibility," said Ron Nief, one of the two Beloit College officials who compiles the list. "Now the question is, `What took so long?'"'

Delaware Woman Charged With Abusing A Corpse

Story here. They found her son wrapped up in her basement and she isn't being held for murder? Excerpt:

'However, Delaware State Police say they were unable to verify Hooks’ story. Due to concerns for the welfare of the child, detectives obtained a search warrant on July 25th for Hooks’ home in the unit block of Squire Circle in the Royal Grant Development.

During the search, detectives located “a suspiciously wrapped package” in a storage area. The package was removed by the Medical Examiner’s Office which later determined it to be the remains of a male child at least one year of age.

Hooks was arrested and arraigned on the charge of abusing a corpse. She is currently held on $1,000.00 cash bail.'

Petition: Stop Sexism in The Affordable Care Act

Petition here. Excerpt:

'Now that men and women pay equally for healthcare, shouldn't men receive equal coverage when it comes to fully covered services? Shouldn't there finally be a government health office dealing with men's health? Men and women should sign this petition no matter if they agree with the Affordable Care Act or not. The Act is sexist and needs to be made unbiased should it remain in existence in its present state. (Since Change.org seems to have cropped my original top photo to remove all resemblence of what it was supposed to portray, the chart shows govt. funding for cancer by gender (millions of $) 2009. The first bar graph is for the National Institute of Health and the second bar graph is the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).)

Circumcision, the ultimate parenting dilemma

Article here. Excerpt:

'While Europe increasingly questions the practice of circumcising boys, US paediatricians are about to say that the medical case for it is getting stronger. Most US adult men are circumcised, but the number of newborns having the op is falling, and is now below 50% in some states - intensifying the dilemma for parents.
...
Unlike in Europe - where rates are low, and circumcision is mostly confined to the Jewish and Muslim communities - circumcision is one of the most common operations in the US.

Three-quarters of American adult men are circumcised. There are over one million procedures each year, or around one every 30 seconds.

But rates are falling, as parents - like Stephen Box and his wife - are opting to break with tradition, and alongside this, an increasingly vocal anti-circumcision movement has emerged.
...
Take the most private part of the male body, add parenting rights, children's rights, disputed science, history, tradition and a dollop of religion, and you have the recipe for a controversy that will run and run.'

Why boys' literacy skills lag behind girls' and how to bridge the reading gap

Article here. Excerpt:

'"Parents come into the library every day concerned that their boys aren't reading," said Linda Brilz, youth services supervisor at Boise Public Library in Idaho. But the problem is bigger than "not reading." Across the country and around the world studies show that young men lag behind their female peers in literacy skills by significant margins.

"There is a huge disparity in performance," said William Brozo, professor of literacy at George Mason University's Graduate School of Education.

How serious is the problem? Some of the most compelling data on the topic comes from the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment, an exam given to 15-year olds in 65 countries. On the 2000 PISA exam, girls outperformed boys in reading by an average of 32 points. By 2009, the gap had increased to 39 points.'

U.S. Supports Circumcision Abroad, Should Do Same at Home

Article here. Excerpt:

'The U.S. government is justifiably proud of its leadership abroad funding male circumcision as a way to prevent HIV infections. The president’s AIDS relief program boasts of having provided more than 1 million circumcisions in 14 African countries.

The record of government support for male circumcision within the U.S., however, is nothing to crow about. More and more states (18 so far) are dropping Medicaid coverage for routine infant male circumcision, contributing to a decline in rates from 79 percent throughout the 1970s to 55 percent in 2010. This has occurred even as evidence of the medical benefits of the procedure has stacked up.

Decline in circumcisions costing health care system billions, study finds

Article here. Excerpt:

'"The economic evidence is backing up what we already know medically," said Dr. Aaron Tobian, a Hopkins health epidemiologist and pathologist and senior researcher on the study.

The findings are the latest in a continuing debate over the health benefits of a procedure that was once common practice in the United States — and comes as the Academy of American Pediatrics prepares to announce updated guidelines on male circumcision next week.

Circumcision became controversial in the 1970s when the rate of procedures began to decline. Today, about 55 percent of the 2 million baby boys born each year are circumcised, compared with a peak of 79 percent in the 1970s and 1980s.

How Government Destroys Marriages

Article here. Excerpt:

'The saga isn’t over yet, but the story is so bizarre that it deserves to be told nationwide. The accused has my sympathy, even though he is a left-wing Democrat. Yes, I believe that leftists deserve due process and fair treatment in our criminal justice system.

The local prosecutor charged Mirkarimi with the crimes of domestic violence and child endangerment, which sound bad, but the evidence was trivial. The domestic-violence charge was based on Mirkarimi grabbing his wife’s arm during a New Year’s Eve argument, which allegedly left a bruise, and the child endangerment charge was based solely on their toddler (who was not touched) merely being present when this argument took place.

Mirkarimi’s wife, Eliana Lopez, never made any complaint, and she publicly defended her husband. She is an intelligent adult, a former Venezuelan telenovela star, who is perfectly able to make her own decisions.

Title IX: 40 Years Later, U.S. Women Reign Supreme

Article here. Excerpt:

'United States women Olympians came home bedecked in gold and silver as if they had walked off with the crown jewels from the Tower of London.

Only one nation other than the United States managed to win more gold than our wonder women. American men didn’t come close to taking as many medals as their female counterparts.

Surely Michael Phelps, with his record half a dozen London medals for a total of 22, including 18 gold through three Olympics; and Usain Bolt of Jamaica, the “world’s fastest man,” who defended his Olympic gold in both track dashes, will be well remembered as stars of the XXX Olympics.
...
They also reminded us that there was a time 40 years ago when congressmen acted like adults as they voted to protect women athletes from those foolish old chauvinistic white men who made up the minority and waged war on women, just as they are doing today.'
