Whoah! Let me assert right here that I myself am a white male, and a middle-aged one at that. How can I make such a blatantly outrageous, undemocratic suggestion? Let me put it thusly:

It’s unbecoming. Nobody likes a bitter, sore loser. Steven Werner said the comments came after his 15-year-old daughter arrived at her Michigan school in a Halloween costume which included a black skirt and knee-high black stockings with pink bows.

Mr Werner said his daughter was called into Principal Janet Jones’s office because of the outfit.

"She said to my daughter, 'Honey, you look like a porn star'. My daughter said, 'What do you mean a porn star?' She goes, 'You know, a porn star. You know what those people do?' My daughter said no," he said.

Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.

Why do we need the Equal Rights Amendment? Last year, I asked Rep. Carolyn Maloney (who was reelected this week also) this same question. Here's what she told me:

Laws can be repealed. Judicial attitudes can shift. We continue to see demonstrable cases of systemic gender discrimination -- even in this day and age, when women have come so far. Establishing the clear unambiguous language of the Equal Rights Amendment into the U.S. Constitution would have a real impact on our national consciousness. Our democracy rests on the principle of 'liberty and justice for all.' We need the ERA to ensure that this concept applies equal to women.
