A national survey showed most people favor reforming the Violence Against Women Act. SAVE agrees with the need for reform. We are especially concerned about VAWA's lack of presumption of innocence.
Let's do what we can to fix this. Since there are VAWA negotiations already going on, Eric Cantor needs to hear from you, ASAP! Call (202) 225-2815 and tell Sen. Cantor: "the new definition of sexual assault must be removed from the final version of VAWA!"
We may not have a lot of time left, so let's not waste a minute.

'A woman labelled "the nymphomaniac of Munich" has been found dead after a drug-fuelled night with a neighbour.
Antje Crapnik, who has twice been arrested for kidnapping men and forcing them to have sex with her, was discovered unresponsive by the man she had just spent the night with.
The 47-year-old was treated for sex addiction in April after police smashed down the down the door to her apartment where she was holding DJ Dieter Schultz against his will, the Sun reports.
Schultz had willingly gone to Crapnik's home after the pair met, but when he tried to leave Crapanik locked the doors and hid her key.
She forced him to have sex with her five more times before he was able to contact police when she fell asleep.
Crapnik avoided any jail time but was forced to consult a psychiatrist for her addiction and admitted that she needed to have sex at least 10 times a day.

'Terrill Swift, Michael Saunders, Harold Richardson, and Vincent Thames – known as the “Englewood Four” – had their convictions for a 1994 murder overturned last year, after DNA evidence cleared them of guilt.
Richardson and Saunders spent 17 years behind bars before they were cleared. Swift and Thames served 12 years in prison, and had already been released when they were cleared.
Now, all four men are suing the city, Cook County prosecutors, and several detectives, claiming authorities ignored evidence that a career criminal, Johnny “Maniac” Douglas, was responsible for the murders. Last year, new DNA testing linked Douglas to Glover’s murder.

'Equal pay litigation has reached "almost epidemic proportions" but has failed to eradicate unfair pay discrimination over the past few decades, a leading judge has claimed.
Lord Justice Mummery launched a broadside against the “interminable litigation” brought to employment tribunals, implying that workers and employers had better things to spend their money on than lawyers’ fees.
The aim of equal pay legislation was not to bring about endless tribunals but to put an end to sex discrimination in matters of pay - something that was taking “a very long time indeed” to achieve, he added.
The appeal court judge said: “Over 30 years of litigation have not eradicated unjustified pay discrimination against both women and men.
"Equal pay litigation in the Employment Tribunals has now reached almost epidemic proportions…

'A 4th District Court judge says he is "astonished and deeply troubled" by a Utah adoption agency’s deliberate move to circumvent the rights of a married man whose daughter was adopted at birth without his knowledge.
The Provo judge, while noting the birth mother had deceived her husband, the adoption agency and the prospective parents, has given the adoptive couple 60 days to give the child back.
In a 48-page ruling, Judge Darold McDade said the Adoption Center of Choice’s policy of refusing to disclose any information to Terry Achane once he learned what had happened to his baby is "utterly indefensible."
Salt Lake City attorneys Mark and Scott Wiser, the father/son team that represented Achane, used even stronger language for what occurred.

'You’ve probably met a few in your time: Women so embittered by the past wrongs they experienced from men that they want to write you, your friends and every other man off as a prick, a**hole or bastard. To put them on display, we’ve put together a top 10 list of manhaters.
These include a range of women who regularly trade on their hatred of men for their career to scorned women just tapping into their hatred. From consistent tirades against our gender to recent confessions to the media, one thing is clear: when a manhater enters the room, the temperature immediately drops a few degrees.
Ready to see which ice queens made the list? Here’s our list of the top 10 manhaters.'

'THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION recently approved proposals from justice commissioner Viviane Reding to have women in at least 40% of board positions by 2020. Unfortunately, following fierce opposition from a number of member states, including the UK, the proposals have been watered down and will not address the unconscious and political bias which blocks the progress of a pool of talented and aspiring senior women executives.
The proposals approved by the European Commission will require member states to put in place measures designed to ensure women hold 40% of non-executive board positions by 2020. These apply only to large listed companies and the proposal is for a common objective, rather than prescriptive regulations and sanctions.

'"If you want a transformative change, if you want something to move forward faster, you sometimes have to impose mechanisms to reach that," said Hilde Tonne, executive vice president and head of group industrial development at Norway's largest telecoms company Telenor.
She rejects criticism that quotas lead to tokenism, or the hiring of women who are not as qualified as men available for the same job.
"You want someone to be there because they are the best candidate," she said. "I think you get more and more competent women to choose from and you get more and more men that have had to compete with women so they are more competent now as well."
Others, including prominent businesswomen, say quotas interfere with the rights of companies to determine what is best for their businesses.'

After a Duke Law Review article chided the Department of Education's Sexual Assault Directive for its "fatally inadequate discussion" and "unacceptable" and "perverse" effects on due process, Russlynn Ali resigned. Ali headed the Dept. of Education's Office for Civil Rights and was the lead author of the Directive.
Today, email or call Dept. of Ed. Secretary Arne Duncan with the message, "Repeal the Sexual Assault Directive!"
Email: arne.duncan-at-ed.gov
Call: 1-800-USA-LEARN (872-5327)
Nearly 90 editorials have criticized the Directive for ignoring civil rights, removing the presumption of innocence, and fostering false allegations: http://www.saveservices.org/camp/ded-editorials/
Let's end this nonsense now!

'Not only are men more likely than women to be diagnosed with cancer, among those who get the disease, men also have a higher chance of dying from it, according to a new study.
In an analysis of cases of all but the sex-specific cancers like prostate and ovarian cancers, for example, men with the disease were more likely than women to die in each of the past 10 years, researchers found.
That translates to an extra 24,130 men dying of cancer in 2012 because of their gender.
"This gap needs to be closed," said Dr. Shahrokh Shariat from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, who worked on the study.
"It's not about showing that men are only doing worse and, ‘poor men.' It's about closing gender differences and improving health care" for both men and women, he said.'

'When Forbes released its annual list of Hollywood’s highest-paid women in October, it was no surprise that Oprah Winfrey passed everyone else by a mile. Her vast media empire, pulling in $165 million last year, swamped her nearest competitor, Britney Spears, whose earnings from music, TV and product endorsements totaled a distant second at $58 million. Spears’ career has made a spectacular recovery after what seemed like a squalid death spiral just a few short years ago -- but she’s being given a run for her money by the new gals in town.
