N.J. educators unsure how to improve 4th-grade boys' reading scores on state test

Article here. Excerpt:

'Young boys across the country have trailed their female classmates in language arts proficiency for at least four decades, but over the last four years, the gender gap in New Jersey’s public schools has widened, test results released last week show.

Between 2009 and 2012, the percentage of fourth-grade girls who passed the reading section of the annual NJ ASK test held at about 65 percent, while the share of boys who passed declined by 8.1 percentage points.

This year, nearly half of the state’s fourth-grade boys failed the test.

Male students’ declining reading proficiency is evident to some degree in every grade and in every demographic subgroup, according to superintendents, who said they don’t understand why this is happening or how to solve the problem.'

UK: Modern men too selfish to get 'the snip'?

Article here. Excerpt:

Yesterday, the Daily Mail published an article on the free-falling rate of UK vasectomies and implied that modern men are to blame.

In 2001-02, there were 37,700 procedures across England and Wales, compared with 15,106 in 2011. There's been a 16 per cent decline in the past two years alone.

According to the feature, which was written by Tom Rawstorne, many women across the country blame the decline on men being 'selfish'.

They also assume that male fertility is a ticking infidelity time bomb - something which should be treated as highly suspicious, not a natural human state.

I disagree.

The truth is that modern life, and medicine, has simply out-grown the vasectomy.'

Kansas demands that sperm donor pay child support

Story here. Excerpt:

'A Kansas man who donated sperm to a lesbian couple three years ago is fighting the state’s demand that he pay child support.

The two women raising the 3-year-old girl say they support the man, who responded to an ad they posted on the Craigslist website in 2009, the Topeka Capital-Journal reported.

The issue of child support arose when the two women broke up, and the couple applied for state services. Workers at the Kansas Department for Children and Families demanded the donor’s name and then filed a child-support claim against him, the newspaper said.

Angela Bauer, one of the mothers, told the Capital-Journal that she and her former partner, Jennifer Schreiner, support the donor, William Marotta, “in whatever action he wants to go forward with” to fight the state's demand.'

A Call for Sensitivity in Discussing Circumcision

Article here. Excerpt:

'Since I used to be pro-cutting and am now adamantly opposed to it, I remember which messages I used to scoff at, and which messages actually got me to listen. I couldn't identify with the horror of the procedure until I learned about it in a non-judgmental manner.

When I became increasingly interested in the cause this past year, I sought out other intactivist “converts” like me but encountered sparing results. Most acquaintances and friends with whom I’ve spoken understand why I feel passionately about the issue and agree its practice should end, but few of them ever actively supported circumcision.

UK pop star uses sexual violence against Simon Cowell look-alike in new video

The Brit singer is then seen bending down and unzipping the double's trousers.

Seconds later the lookalike, who is dressed in a black suit and wearing X Factor boss Cowell's trademark sunglasses, screams in pain as Madame Allsorts — real name Alayna Salter — severs his manhood.'

Flawed Violence Against Women Act Could Become Next Lame-Duck Fight

Article here. Excerpt:

'As the lame-duck session of Congress grinds to a close, policymakers are feeling the pressure to rush passage of a number of expansive, potentially faulty pieces of legislation before the year’s end. Recent rumors swirling around Washington suggest the House may consider anew language in a Senate-passed version of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) reauthorization in the next few weeks.

Despite the original law’s good intentions to support female victims of violence, recent reauthorizations—including those before Congress—are seriously flawed and have steered the law away from its original intent of protecting vulnerable women.'

UK: Pro-men party has Harriet in its sights

Story here. Excerpt:

'Male rights campaigners are setting up an anti-feminist political party and plan to stand against Harriet Harman and other prominent feminists at the next General Election.

The ‘men power’ is being orchestrated by Mike Buchanan, 55, a former business consultant who opposes tokenism and says ‘our political elite has become detached from reality with its state-sponsored feminism’.

Mr Buchanan is not some fruitcake of the Monster Raving Loony party ilk. A bookish fellow from Bath, full of statistics, he has recently given evidence to a parliamentary select committee.

He has also been interviewed on Radio 4 and has spoken at political party conference fringe events about the Establishment’s demands for more women in boardrooms.'

"Breadwinner women" idea bothers feminists

Article here. Excerpt:

'She was celebrated as a feminist success story, lifted aloft for shifting the gender imbalance in women’s favour, for showing that providing financially for ones’ family is no longer just a man’s job.
...
But cultural anxieties about what this shift means for the workplace, for parenting and, especially, for men meant successful women were as torn as ever. The female breadwinner talk became all about men and their inevitable decline.

In her book The End of Men and the Rise of Women, Hanna Rosin, a senior editor at The Atlantic, argued that “at this unprecedented moment, women are no longer merely gaining on men; they have pulled decisively ahead in every measure,” and lit a match under the simmering gender wars, angering a surprising cohort: Feminists themselves.

"Cops: Woman, 50, Battered Boyfriend, 32, Because Six Came Before Nine"

Story here. Notice how TSG makes light of the attack via their headline. Wouldn't see this if the sexes were reversed. Excerpt:

'A Florida woman is jailed on a battery rap for allegedly striking her boyfriend after he “finished first and stopped pleasuring her” during a mutual oral sex session late last night in the victim’s home, police report.

Jennie Scott, 50, was booked into the Manatee County lockup on a misdemeanor charge stemming from the 11 PM encounter in the Palmetto bedroom of Jilberto Deleon, 32. Scott has dated Deleon “for the last 5 years on and off,” according to a sheriff’s report.

Deputies were summoned to Deleon’s home by a witness who heard the couple arguing and saw Scott (seen at right) atop Deleon “punching and scratching him.” She also allegedly struck Deleon with a stick and threatened to hit him with a wrench before the tool was taken from her hand by the witness.'

The Dark Side of Feminism - Why Women Don't Like Powerful Women

Article here. Excerpt:

'It would have been better if she had dark circles under her eyes. Maybe a little bit of flab around the middle. At the very least a stain on her blouse – anything. Instead, in her first public appearance since the birth of her son, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer was as slim and blonde as ever, beaming at the cameras.

"The baby's been easy," she said – no problem at all. How shocking!

Women all over America and the world followed Mayer’s appointment as head of the Internet giant Yahoo, and then early this fall the birth of her first child. Remembering their own tough first few months with a new baby, many young mothers wondered how she would manage. Very well, thank you, as it turns out. And that did not go down well at all.
