High School Announces 100% College Placement of Boys

Article here. Excerpt:

'Boys' education is becoming a hot-button issue for modern education institutions in America as educators see disturbing trends. Across all demographics of ethnicity, socio-economic status, and age group, boys consistently underperform in school relative to girls. Overall, boys account for 90% of disciplinary referrals, 70% of failing grades, and they make up 44% of higher education attendees (male to female ratio in the US is 51:49). However, while the debate rages on for how to address the issue of educating and engaging young men more effectively, Grand River Academy seems to have the formula pretty well figured out.

'Buffalo Bills defensive end Mario Williams may be entering the second year of a six-year, $96 million contract, but right now, he's much more worried about $785,000.

According to The Buffalo News' Dan Herbeck, Williams has filed a lawsuit against his ex-fiancée, Erin Marzouki, in Houston's Harris County Court to obtain a 10-carat engagement ring he gave her in a proposal.

Williams alleges in his lawsuit that Marzouki never wanted to marry him and only used him for his money.

The lawsuit also alleges that there was an agreement in place that if the engagement were called off, she would return the ring. Marzouki reportedly called off the engagement in January after receiving the ring in February 2012.

Exonerated Coach Dismissed

Story here. Excerpt:

'Hoffner was charged with possession of child pornography in August after school officials found videos of his naked children on his work-issued cellphone, which he had turned in to be repaired. A judge cleared him in November, ruling that the short videos of his children acting silly after a bath were not child porn and showed nothing illegal.

After the criminal case was dismissed, university officials removed Hoffner as head football coach, reassigned him to an administrative role, as assistant athletic director for facilities development, and suspended him for 20 days for an unspecified reason. He tried to fight his reassignment and suspension though his union, the Inter Faculty Organization, which represents faculty in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.
...
The MnSCU system has a policy prohibiting the use of university-issued cellphones or mobile devices for personal business.

Male Teachers Get Longer Sentences For Sexually Abusing Students Than Female Teachers

Article here. Excerpt:

'A Star-Ledger investigation has found that male teachers receive harsher punishments than female teachers when they are convicted of crimes involving sexual relationships with students. Experts credit the disparity to societal perceptions that young girls must be protected and are much more vulnerable than their underage male counterparts.

The sample, which followed cases in New Jersey, found that 54 percent of male defendants went to prison, while only 44 percent of women did time after they were found to have conducted inappropriate sexual activities. The longest jail term for a male teacher was 10 years, compared with 7 for a female. Interestingly, that 7 year sentence was the result of a female coach having relations with a female player.

SAVE: Ethics Board Issues Rebuke of Hancock Co. Prosecutor Mary Kellett

Press release here. Excerpt:

'WASHINGTON / May 7, 2013 – A state ethics board has issued a report concluding Hancock County prosecutor Mary N. Kellett engaged in multiple counts of prosecutorial misconduct arising from a 2009 assault trial. The ethical violations include ignoring a court order, misleading members of a jury, evidence suppression, and indulging in “conduct unworthy of an attorney.”

The Board of Overseers of the Bar report petitions the Maine Supreme Judicial Board to impose “appropriate disciplinary sanction” on assistant district attorney Kellett.

The Board report, issued April 24, 2013, documents how Kellett engaged in a series of maneuvers designed to withhold exculpatory documents that would have demonstrated the innocence of Vladek Filler, charged in 2007 on five counts of spousal sexual assault.'

The other gender divide: where men are losing out

Article here. Excerpt:

'It's difficult to deny that women suffer more than men as a result of their gender, and highlighting the myriad ways in which this happens is one of the cornerstones of modern feminism – which is currently enjoying a revival in the UK and elsewhere.

But justice isn't a relative concept. If it were, we could suggest we should care less about racism against black people just because Asian people in this country are more likely to be victims of racially-motivated hate crime.

Obviously that's nonsense. But so might be ignoring issues that affect men more severely than women just because women, overall, have it worse.

Parents: Teacher forced son to lick drawing on desk

Story here. Excerpt:

'TROY -- The parents of a Troy 5th grader were shocked when their son told them his teacher told him to lick his desk clean after he was caught drawing on it in February. Since then his parents said they’ve attempted to go through proper channels within the district to get the teacher reprimanded, but were unsuccessful.

“I said ‘we can end all this by her going in front of the class with my son and apologizing for her actions’ he [the principal] says’ that would be a directive. I cannot give a directive and it wouldn't be sincere’ and I said ‘is that all you're going to do?’ and he said ‘well basically we’ve handled it, it's confidential’. Point blank,” said George Spencer, the boy’s father.

'Sexism and the Single Murderess'

Article here. Excerpt:

'Knox and Arias aren’t just women accused of murder. They’re minxes accused of murder, sitting in their courtroom seats with scarlet letters emblazoned on their chests, no jury needed to pronounce them guilty of wantonness at the very least. For men, lust is a tripwire. For women, it’s a noose.

I’ve heard quite a bit lately about David Petraeus’s road to redemption. I’ve heard less about Paula Broadwell’s. Yes, he’s the more public figure, but the disparity also reflects the way their affair was often portrayed in the first place. He strayed; she preyed. He was weak; she was wily. He was the fly, she the spider.

Let’s bring a few other recent news stories into this. Let’s indulge in a few hypotheticals.'
