'In addition to this tragedy, the city of Prescott has officially denied paying out his benefits claiming he was not full time. This is not accurate at all. He had been working his scheduled 40 hour weeks, he had obtained their goals required of full time status and had been given a raise above that of a seasonal employee. Because of that, his employee file had been forwarded onto the city managers' office with the endorsement of his supervisors. Unfortunately, they too perished in that fire and cannot confirm this. The delay in the process is the primary reason for their not approving his status. Nonetheless, he was verbally assured of his status, he was working his required schedule as a full time employee, being paid as a full time employee therefore is due full time benefits.'

'Brooks' point piece turns out to be a popular column topic among conservative writers: Why aren't people working? The twist in this one is that it's a gender-based thesis. Brooks got hold of some stats showing that men are having more trouble recovering the jobs lost in the recent recession than women. He cites a Floyd Norris column from this weekend, "Gender Gaps Appear as Employment Recovers From Recession," which provides all the relevant numbers.

Remember that scene in American Psycho where Christian Bale stabs Reg E. Cathey's homeless "Al" character? The part where he's like, "Get a job, Al – you've got a negative attitude, that's what's holding you back!" Fellas, Mssrs. Brooks and Voight, that was satire. About the last thing the millions of broke Americans out there need is someone like you telling them their problem is that they need a more positive attitude. Actually their problem is much more simple: not enough jobs. Really, that's pretty much it. It's not a mystery.'

'The company offered high-end matchmaking services to professionals too busy to find a date — but in its efforts to provide discriminating companionship to its clients, the It’s Just Lunch dating service ended up discriminating against its own employees.
It’s Just Lunch agreed to pay out $900,000 to settle an EEOC lawsuit that alleged that the company refused to hire men for jobs as dating directors or inside sales representatives.
Most of the cash will go toward compensating men who applied for the jobs in question between 2007 and 2013 but were not considered for hire. Part of the money is also going to Lynda Twist, the former human resources director, who says she was fired after she spoke up against the company’s hiring practices.'

'A rising number of male voters appears to be giving up the struggle to find work as the job market weakens, creating a soft underbelly in Labor’s traditional support base.
As Labor pitches itself as the best-placed party to manage a deteriorating economy, official figures showed the male participation rate plunged last month to its lowest level in almost nine years.
Experts say lower participation is a strong sign workers are becoming discouraged as employers scrap hiring plans and shed staff.
The falling proportion of active men helped soften upward pressure on the nation’s jobless rate – which held steady at 5.7 per cent in July.'

'NEW laws that will demand unmarried fathers' names are included on their child's birth certificate will do little to protect their legal rights, campaigners have claimed.
Government plans, approved today, will ensure for the first time that both parents' names must be registered.
But Eamonn Quinn, of campaign group Unmarried and Separated Parents of Ireland, said the move does not go far enough because they fail to guarantee an unmarried man guardianship or access rights.
"Getting the name on the birth certificate doesn't give a father automatic rights," Mr Quinn said.'

'Cathy Richardson, 26, from Viking Court in Shoebury, Essex, told officers she had been sexually assaulted several times over two months in 2012 by a man she knew.
A man was arrested on suspicion of rape but was later released without charge after a series of interviews.
Richardson was jailed for 12 months at Basildon Crown Court after admitting perverting the course of justice.
...
He said the outcome of the prosecution of Richardson should send out "a very clear message" to anyone who deliberately lied to police.
"The actions of Cathy Richardson in this case led to an innocent man being arrested, having to spend time in a custody cell and undergoing an intrusive and personal medical examination," he said.'

'Twitter's public apology to women who have been subjected to online abuse is another significant victory for those campaigning against online misogyny. It follows in the wake of the successful #FBrape campaign that persuaded advertisers to suspend their marketing activities on Facebook until it made a commitment to tackle "gender-based hate".
...
Second, there is the issue of how we tackle violence and abuse full stop. Anyone following the debate about gender hate-speech on social media in recent months could be forgiven for thinking that online abuse is always perpetrated by men and suffered by women. And yet a survey by the website Knowthenet in 2011 found that 19-year-old males were most at risk from cyberbullying among teenagers, with 85% saying they had been victims, while figures from the World Health Organisation reveal that men account for 81% of violent deaths globally every year.

'More and more Jewish parents in America and Israel are avoiding circumcision. Instead, they are holding alternative ceremonies sometimes called Bris Shalom or Brit B’lee Milah (covenant without cutting) ceremonies. Many Jews throughout Europe and the former Soviet Union have stopped circumcising over 100 years ago. Already over 100 Rabbis are performing alternative covenant ceremonies that omit the violent circumcision. These are gaining popularity both in the United States and worldwide.
...
Jewish parents can find a Rabbi, or Cantor to lead a Bris without cutting via Dr. Mark Reiss' Brit Shalom Celebrants List. Many parents are finding that their regular Rabbi or Cantor are happy to do so as well, even if they are not on this list.

Essay here. Excerpt:
'Thirty-six years later my son was born. Two days before his planned circumcision, while searching online for recommendations on the doctor-mohel we chose, I stumbled upon the following paragraph from The Guide for the Perplexed by Maimonides, the great Jewish philosopher:
“As regards circumcision, I think that one of its objects is to limit sexual intercourse, and to weaken the organ of generation as far as possible, and thus cause man to be moderate. Some people believe that circumcision is to remove a defect in man’s formation; but every one can easily reply: How can products of nature be deficient so as to require external completion, especially as the use of the foreskin to that organ is evident. The bodily injury caused to that organ is exactly that which is desired; This is, as I believe, the best reason for the commandment concerning circumcision.”
I was shocked. I realized that the Jewish motivation for circumcision was diminishing sexual pleasure, the same motivation as the one behind female genital cutting.
