The fall of man in American culture

Article here. Excerpt:

'1. The feminist movement was a two-edged sword. As it sought to liberate women, it did so at the expense of men as it attacked so-called toxic masculinity. Along the way, it eviscerated the vital role of men as fathers, heads of households, providers and protectors.

Specifically, society at large encouraged men to get in touch with their “feminine-side” as they abandoned their traditional roles in family and society in deference to the ability of women to supplant them as equals.

2. The attack on men, became a war on boys. Even though nearly all scientific literature indicates that boys and girls mature at different rates and are stimulated by different things, mothers in the home and teachers in schools began to push back against the things that little boys are made of, including boundless rambunctious energy.

In the 1960s, with the dispensing of drugs like Ritalin, hyperactive young boys were diagnosed as having attention deficit disorders at twice the rate of girls and were deleteriously drugged accordingly.'

Why have so many American men given up on work?

Article here. Excerpt:

'Many men in the U.S. leave the labor force when their earnings decline compared with their better-paid peers, new research shows. The study found that more men drop out when workers' relative earnings fall.

The findings, from the Federal Reserve of Boston, help explain a trend economists have been puzzling over for decades: Why so many men have given up on the idea of holding down a job. Roughly one in nine men ages 25 to 54, an individual's prime working years, are out of the labor market today; that compared to one in 50 in the mid-1950s.'

Women Sue Elon Musk's Twitter Alleging Discriminatory Layoffs

Article here. Excerpt:

'Two women who lost their jobs at Twitter when billionaire Elon Musk took over are suing the company in federal court, claiming that last month’s abrupt mass layoffs disproportionately affected female employees.

The discrimination lawsuit is the latest in a series of legal challenges over Musk’s decimation of Twitter’s workforce through mass layoffs and firings.

Days after the world’s richest man bought the social media platform for $44 billion, the company told about half of employees on Nov. 4 that they no longer had a job but would get three months severance. The lawsuit filed in a San Francisco federal court this week alleges that 57% of female employees were laid off, compared to fewer than half of men, despite Twitter employing more men overall before the layoffs.
...
The lawsuit alleges that also disproportionately harmed women, “who are more often caregivers for children and other family members, and thus not able to comply with such demands.”'

My Husband Is Too Much of a Feminist When It Comes to Raising Our Daughters.

Article here. Excerpt:

'My husband of 15 years has had a pretty hard time with not having great men in his life. His father used to hit him, his siblings, and his mother. His sister and her toddler were killed by her boyfriend. And his high school girlfriend killed herself after admitting to my husband that her grandfather had been raping her for years. When we first met, I loved dating a man who was so involved in women’s issues but now I feel it is too much. I’m a woman who has had great male role models in my life, my dad, my brother, my uncle, my teachers, my granddads, etc. I know how amazing men are and how much good they can do.

Senators introduce legislation to bolster Title IX protections

Article here. Excerpt:

'Sens. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) and Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) will introduce new anti-harassment legislation Thursday that aims to strengthen Title IX protections for student survivors of sexual assault or harassment.
...
Casey and Hirono’s SAFER Act would amend Title IX and other statutes prohibiting sex-based discrimination to remove “unreasonably burdensome” standards for private harassment lawsuits seeking damages.

“So many students who endure sexual harassment or assault experience isolation, fear, and difficulty focusing on their education as they process a traumatic ordeal,” Casey said Thursday in a statement to The Hill. “To add insult to injury, students who report their experiences face an uphill battle to seek justice.”'

UK: My son was killed by his fiancée but we can save others by opening more refuges

Article here. Excerpt:

'A mum whose son was stabbed to death by his fiancée is calling for more refuges to open for male victims of domestic violence.

Jose Linnane, 67, screamed "like an animal" when police told her her son Simon Gilchrist had been murdered at his flat in York in 2004.

The 23-year-old's abusive fiancée Caroline Mawhood stabbed him in the heart after she came home from a night of drinking.

Mrs Linnane is now desperately trying to prevent further deaths by calling for new refuges to open.

London does not have a single refuge for male victims of domestic violence, according to the charity ManKind.

Mrs Linnane, from York, told the Mirror: "It makes me spit feathers there's not a single refuge for men in London.'

‘Shark Week’ blasted for ‘overwhelmingly’ featuring ‘White men' as shark experts in Washington Post report

Article here. Excerpt:

'The Washington Post published a report Monday slamming Discovery Channel’s "Shark Week" programming for featuring too many White males as shark experts and continuing to peddle "negative messages" about sharks.

The report highlighted a study done by the Public Library of Science led by Allegheny College biology professor Lisa Whitenack. The project observed that "Discovery’s programming emphasized negative messages about sharks, lacked useful messaging about shark conservation and overwhelmingly featured White men as experts — including several with the same name."
...
Shiffman implied that this may be due to discrimination on the part of Discovery Channel. He said, "When there are hundreds of people of color interested who work in this field, [and] when my field is more than half women, maybe it’s not an accident anymore that they’re only featuring White men."'

UK: The “Toxic Male Gaze”: Should men staring at women be illegal?

Article here. Excerpt:

'Earlier this year it was reported that “A senior police officer has urged everyone who witnesses "intense staring" on the London Underground to report it, amid concerns it could be an early sign of unhealthy sexual behaviour… Posters have now been place in tube [train] stations across the capital stating: "Intrusive staring of a sexual nature is sexual harassment and is not tolerated"”.

It should go without saying that sexual harassment of any kind should be discouraged. However, we don’t all agree on what constitutes sexual harassment. In addition, the specific issue of intense/intrusive staring is in many ways subjective, so raises a lot of questions. I guess when thinking about how we are looking, and being looked at, on public transport, we should start with the question of how do we know when intense starting is of a sexual nature? And can women be charged with ‘sexual staring’ too?'

Stanford University Under Investigation For Sex Bias—Against Men

Article here. Excerpt:

'Stanford University is being investigated by the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) for bias against men. According to the complaint filed with the OCR, the elite school offers several programs to support women and no equivalents for men. The Stanford women’s programs are just the latest in a long list of university-based women's initiatives under fire for violating regulations that prohibit sex discrimination.

The original claim against Stanford included complaints regarding 27 Stanford programs that Moore and Pekgoz believed violated Title IX. This month, the Office of Civil Rights officially opened an investigation into five of these programs: Stanford's Women in Business, Women in Stanford Law, Stanford Women in Design, Stanford Society of Women Engineers and the Gabilan Provost's Discretionary Fund.

The Intersections of America

'These types of articles are important as our parents, educators, and policy makers look to close gaps and improve essential student skills, and I would encourage the Times and others to actually dig a little deeper. Discussions on “student groups” that do not disaggregate information by sex often miss the largest group of students struggling to close the achievement gap in reading and college participation, boys.

Discussing race and marginalizing sex is not unique to data collection, particularly in areas where boys and men are most impacted. In a recent GIBM report on the Status of Boys and Men in Washington State, GIBM learned that 2021 data and 2022 preliminary data on overdose deaths by sex was not readily available on the Washington State Department of Health (WA DOH) website, even as males historically represent the largest percentage of deaths by a significant margin. ...
