Why society is failing men and boys

Article here. Excerpt:

'Every day, we see more grown men and young boys dropping out of school, dropping out of work and choosing to drop out of society entirely. They're getting lost in distractions, chasing comfort and losing the sense of purpose that used to drive men to live with meaning and ambition.

We need to turn this around.

In 1998, I started the heavy metal ban All That Remains, and in the past 25 years, I’ve performed for hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Most of them are young men. I’ve had countless conversations with them and often their stories are devastating.'

Nearly one third of all English schools teach toxic masculinity

Article here. Excerpt:

'Nearly one third of English secondary schools and academies are teaching about toxic masculinity in mandatory Relationships or Health Education (RSHE) courses, according to a new report from the Family Education Trust.

Toxic masculinity has multiple contrasting definitions, and its use in educational settings is not uniform. But in some English schools, the most inflammatory read of the concept— that masculinity or men themselves are innately bad — is being taught to students.

For example, 4% of schools teach that young men as a category are problematic, and 5% teach that they possess traits that are inherently toxic and negative to society, the report found. Only 22% of schools teaching this content report it to parents, and at least 18% are working with outside providers in developing toxic masculinity-related curriculum.

The Trust sent 300 Freedom of Information requests to schools over the summer, and only 65% responded.'

UK: Teachers tell schoolboys that 'displaying traditional gendered roles in a family' could lead to them committing rape

Article here. Excerpt:

'Teachers are telling schoolboys that displaying traditional gendered roles in a family could lead to them committing rape, a bombshell report has claimed.

The report from the Family Education Trust (FET) found that almost a third of schools that it surveyed use relationship and sex education classes to teach pupils about 'toxic masculinity'.

In one schools' teaching materials on the subject, children are told that while masculinity 'in and itself is not necessarily a harmful thing' certain masculine traits can be be seen as 'problematic'.

Another presents a 'pyramid of sexual violence', which suggests that certain minor behaviours such as 'displaying traditional gendered roles' may develop into other examples of 'gender-based violence' such as flashing, groping and even rape.

Do We Care When It’s Men?

An original essay by reader Mark L.:

Do We Care When It’s Men?

Recently I have been listening to podcasts in my car. One of these podcasts is “History on Trial.” On this show the host, Mira Hayward, presents the stories of “famous legal battles from American history.” The stories often focus on some injustice that was either caused, remedied, or both by the American legal system.

Episode 16 was titled “The American Plan: Rock v. Carney (1920).” (1) “The American Plan” as we learn in the podcast was the common name for the collection of laws and policies that the Federal and state governments adopted around the time of World War I. The purpose of the American Plan was to fight sexually transmitted infections (STI’s). These laws were deemed necessary because a significant number of US soldiers serving in the war were testing positive for STI’s such as syphilis and gonorrhea.

“History on Trial” explains:

“To combat the problem, the government attempted to reduce sex work around military camps.

According to them, in some cases, paternity revelations could lead to a crisis of identity, which in extreme cases, manifests as suicidal thoughts or severe emotional turmoil.

In recent years, Nigeria has witnessed a disturbing trend of paternity fraud, where children are discovered not to belong to their supposed fathers.'

New Docs Shed Light On Air Force’s ‘Goal’ To Reduce ‘White Male Population’ Joining Officer Ranks

Article here. Excerpt:

'The Air Force finally handed over a trove of documents pertaining to its sweeping “goal” of reducing the number of white male applicants in a popular officer program after spending months stonewalling requests for their release.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman C.Q. Brown — at the time the highest-ranking member of the Air Force — issued a memorandum in 2022 that the branch was updating its racial and gender demographic goals for applicants seeking to become officers, in a bid to prioritize “diversity and inclusion.” Internal documents obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation include a slideshow from 2022 where the Air Force outlines racial and gender quotas and details how it hopes to “achieve” a reduced number of white males in its Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) officer’s applicant program.'

Why Women Only Make Up One-Third of Tech Industries

Article here. Excerpt:

'The number of women working in STEM has grown by 31% since 2011; however, only about 30 percent of the tech sector comprises women. This begs the question: Why is there so little representation?

From the early stages of their education, women are frequently given fewer chances in STEM fields than men. Societal influences impact this discrepancy, as stereotypes, although disproved, suggest that boys excel in math and science and continue to persist in educational institutions and households. A recent study by UNESCO revealed that women represent over 30 percent of the global STEM workforce — a striking disparity highlighting the limited opportunities accessible to them in these fields.

Grieving Corey Comperatore and Honoring Healthy Masculinity

Article here. Excerpt:

'The world is mourning the tragic death of Corey Comperatore, a volunteer fireman and family man who was gunned down at former President Trump’s campaign rally on Saturday in Pennsylvania.

A bullet intended for the 45th president struck the head of Comperatore, who had thrown himself over his wife and daughters, acting as a literal human shield.

Calling him a “real-life superhero,” one of the heartbroken daughters, Allyson Comperatore, remembered her father as “the best dad a girl could ask for.”

“He threw my mom and I to the ground,” she wrote on social media. “He shielded my body from the bullet that came at us. He loved his family. He truly loved us enough to take a real bullet for us. And I want nothing more than to cry on him and tell him thank you. I want nothing more than to wake up and for this to not be reality for me and my family.”

Australia: Why golf club member was banned for dressing up as a woman - sparking sexism storm

Article here. Excerpt:

'A sexism row has erupted at one of Australia's most prestigious gold clubs after a male player was suspended for dressing up as a woman in protest against a cheaper deal for females.

A male member of Victoria's 13th Beach Golf Links, which hosts the Victorian Open, presented at the golf course's reception desk in a dress and a wig, telling staff he now identified as a woman.

The player and an individual who filmed the video of him approaching the desk, both aged in their 70s, plus another member, have all been suspended by the club.

According to the Herald Sun, a petition among club members is now circulating whereby they are calling for the removal of Grant Phelps, the club's chairman, 'primarily over this issue'.

Explaining the reason for the suspension, general manager Rob Hurley said the trio allegedly breached club policies 'in that they treated staff with disrespect, filmed them without their consent, and then published that video on a messaging service.

England’s national parks overseen by ‘bloated’, mostly white male boards

Article here. Excerpt:

'The boards that oversee England’s national parks are bloated, dominated by men and are severely lacking in diversity, a Guardian analysis has found. The analysis also found that farmers outnumber conservation experts by two to one, nature is rarely on the agenda at board meetings and only one national park can account for the ownership of all the land it covers.

Campaigners said a major overhaul of how national parks were governed was “fundamental” to the recovery of nature in the parks and to serving the public, for whom they were set up.'

Are gender quotas in schools sabotaging success for girls? Bulgaria’s controversial policy puts boys ahead

Article here. Excerpt:

'Bulgaria’s education system has been shaped by gender quotas since the 1960s, aiming for a 50/50 gender balance in classrooms. These quotas were initially created to encourage girls to enter traditionally male-dominated fields, such as science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM). However, our findings suggest that these policies might be doing more harm than good, especially for female students during the high school admissions process.

Despite their original intent, these quotas can sometimes force admissions officers to favour boys—even if they have lower academic scores—to meet the desired gender balance. This has led to situations where girls, who make up 56 per cent of the student population, struggle to get into their preferred schools.
