'Identity politics plays a critical role in the way the left and the right address social issues, and it has seemed more amplified than usual, even as data is telling us to slow down and take a more in depth look.

Mentioning the challenges of white males in America must make some people cringe until you learn over 305,000 white males committed suicide from 2010 to 2020, more than 190,000 have died from alcohol induced causes unrelated to suicide, another 264,000 have died from accidental poisoning and exposure to noxious substances, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control’s Wonder Database. And the list goes on.

Although some legislators are sympathetic, most know a narrative that addresses white males as part of a larger discussion on boys and men is unpopular and unlikely to gain traction in the mainstream media, educational institutions, and with policymakers.

'Texas A&M’s School of Medicine removed photos of graduating seniors who are white males, which were prominently displayed at the entrance of the school, as an example of the university’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

The school indicated such in a survey completed last year for the Association of American Medical Colleges, a nonprofit accrediting organization. The survey responses, which touted the school’s commitment to DEI, were obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request by the medical watchdog group Do No Harm, which passed along the completed survey to The National Desk (TND).

In the survey, the school cited the fact that it removed "predominantly white male photos of graduating class prominently displayed on the entrance" as an example of promoting inclusive communications and branding.

'The Catholic Bishop of Elphin, Dr Kevin Doran, has questioned if “toxic masculinity” is linked to “aggressive feminism” as he called for “gentleness” between the sexes.

In his homily on Sunday, the Sligo-based prelate suggested that “some of the more extreme expressions of feminism have been harmful both to women and to men.”

Toxic masculinity, Dr Doran said, meant that characteristics which are traditionally associated with masculinity, “good things like strength and courage and honour, can sometimes become distorted and exaggerated in such a way that young men feel that it is ok to be violent and rude and to treat women disrespectfully”.

The man, who asked to remain nameless, has told of the "most difficult six months of his life" after he was arrested and investigated on suspicion of rape and assault. He says his entire life was turned upside down and fears the stress could have tragic consequences for others in a similar position.

His current partner, who has been with him throughout the bitter custody battle, was called to her local police station and informed of the allegations, which she was already aware of, under Clare's Law. Also known as the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme (DVDS), it allows anyone to ask police about a partner - this can also be done by a member of the public who can ask about a close friend or family member's partner.'

'A recent article published in the Journal of Chemical Education describes the development of a Feminism and Science course at East Carolina University (ECU) that was offered at the university. The course, the authors argue, should serve as a "model" for other educators to learn from, "present[ing] this work as an example of a transformative pedagogical model to dismantle White supremacy in Chemistry."

The article, titled “A Special Topic Class in Chemistry on Feminism and Science as a Tool to Disrupt the Dysconcious Racism in STEM," argues for a pedagogical framework based on “Critical Race Theory and intersectional feminism."

One of their goals “was to shine light, through this process, [on] how scientific epistemology and culture have strong links with capitalism, enslavement, colonization, and exploitation of female-bodied folks.”

Students also learned the definitions of terms such as diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and systemic racism.'

'A senior at the Main Line’s prestigious Haverford College is suing the school after he says he was the target of a false rape rumor on campus.

The student, who has filed the lawsuit in Philadelphia’s federal court under the pseudonym John Doe, says his problems at Haverford College began in February 2022, when he was a junior. According to the lawsuit, that is when a “false and vicious rumor” began to circulate on campus that he had raped a female student. He claims he never had any physical contact with the student in question.

'Students from Eagle High School pushed back at guest speaker Boise State Professor Scott Yenor during their Thursday school lunch hour for talking about "the effect that feminism has had on our society."

Yenor is a controversial figure in the Treasure Valley -- he has previously received criticism for calling women, "more medicated, meddlesome, and quarrelsome" than they "need to be" and saying "more successful men will mean more happy citizenry and a stronger nation." Yenor said, during a National Conservatism Conference in Orlando, Florida, in 2021 -- that society needs to prepare women to become mothers, not to want careers.

Yenor, a political science professor, also consistently retweets far-right blogs criticizing LGBTQ+ people, women and sex education.

'There seems to be broad agreement across the political spectrum that America has a masculinity problem. For many on the left, men who do not profess sufficiently progressive politics are presumptively “toxic.” For many in the center and on the right, the educational system’s ostensible war on boys and the cultural left’s alleged attack on that so-called “toxic masculinity” are in part to blame for the purposelessness and malaise currently afflicting so many males.

While it’s true that many American boys and men today are struggling (doing less well than girls in school; failing to launch careers or start families; and succumbing to alarming rates of depression, anxiety, drug addiction and suicide), this crisis is not actually about the partial rebranding of masculinity as toxic.

It is, in fact, about the total rebranding of adulthood as offensive.

'Proposals to change UK legislation to protect the rights of women experiencing menopause have been in part rejected by the government due to fears such a move would discriminate against men.

The cross-party women and equalities committee last July published a report focusing on menopause and the workplace, which included a recommendation to make menopause a “protected characteristic” under the Equality Act.

Protected characteristics are a specific set of characteristics that it is illegal to discriminate against, and include age, disability and race among others.

But in its official response to the report, published on Tuesday, the government rejected the proposal, warning of “unintended consequences which may inadvertently create new forms of discrimination, for example, discrimination risks towards men suffering from long-term medical conditions”.'

'A settlement between Northwood University and the U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights will end an award program currently limited to women, as well as a woman-only scholarship program. Men will no longer be excluded.

The resolution of the Title IX case will bring changes to an award program that dates back to 1970, predating the Title IX law of 1972.

As a result of the settlement, Northwood University faces a Jan. 30 deadline to make its Distinguished Women Award and Distinguished Women Endowed Scholarship open to all people, regardless of sex. By Feb. 13, it must send updated promotional materials to the Office of Civil Rights, to prove compliance.

Both the award and the scholarships will be made “open to all eligible persons, regardless of sex,” per the settlement, which was signed by Northwood on Jan. 23.'
