'Advocates are encouraging survivors of sexual assault not to be discouraged by reports of a false claim in Duncan.

Annalee Lepp, associate professor of women’s studies at the University of Victoria, said reports of false claims can have a chilling effect on survivors coming forward.

“When cases like this one in Duncan get a lot of press, I think it does have an effect,” Lepp said.

“There is a sense of, ‘OK, I have to assume I’m not going to be believed.’ So it does have an effect on people thinking about sexual assault and whether or not to come forward.”

Survivors already face many barriers to launching a formal report, she said.

That’s not lay blame on anyone in this case, including the 14-year-old girl at its centre, as police have given no details about what happened, she said.

'Bundi: Harassed over rape allegation by a neighbouring woman and afraid of social humiliation and disgrace, a 61-year-old man late on Friday night committed suicide by consuming pesticide at his home in Kunwarti village under Sadar police station of Bundi city.

The old man was found dead in his room on Saturday morning. Police have booked a couple under Sections of IPC for abetment of suicide and arrested the woman while her husband is absconding.

Ram Prasad Sharma, a resident of Kunwarti village, late last night committed suicide by consuming pesticide at his home, told SHO, Bundi Sadar police station Abhishek Pareek. The old man was upset after a woman of the village levelled charges of rape against him and through court's order lodged a case under Section 376 of IPC against him in Mahila Police station in Bundi five days ago, the SHO said.

'As the debate over campus sexual assaults continues to shadow universities throughout the Carolinas and beyond, more accused male students have started taking their female accusers to court.

In the past three years, male students accused of sexual misconduct have filed hundreds of lawsuits, charging that they were the victims of both false allegations and school procedures that failed to properly vet the claims.

And while there are no exact figures, in dozens of those cases male students also have sued the women who lodged the original allegations. One out-of-state attorney says he has filed more than 15 defamation complaints nationwide on behalf of male students against their accusers.

Per The Local, Madrid just announced that it has banned manspreading—when a man opens his legs to take up a bunch of unnecessary room in an enclosed space—across all of its public transit services. The plate spells out a driver's last name, but that did not stop the Department of Transportation from canceling the plate.

"When the plates first came out, I was so excited about it - this is what I wanted to get for my father. My father put it on the motor home, and he traveled to many states, he traveled across Canada...nothing was ever said," said Lorne Grabher.

'Anyone who has followed the campus sexual assault debate over the last decade has heard advocates, politicians, and reporters throwing around the disconcerting statistic that 1-in-5 women will be the victim of sexual assault while in college. The number is jarring…but is it truthful?

The federal Clery Act mandates that schools track and disclose reported incidents of campus sexual assault. A national crime victimization survey found that 65% of victims of sexual offenses do not report the assault. Currently, 12.7 million women are enrolled in American degree-granting colleges. Even with this underreporting problem, if 20% of college women were victims of sexual assault, one would expect to see large numbers of sexual assaults being reported to school officials.

Jennifer Gauthier’s lies in September 2015 landed her ex-spouse in jail for 19 days, before she recanted her claim, court was told Wednesday.
