'Writing in 2015, Malcolm Gladwell wrote what I think is still the best explanation for modern American mass shootings, and it’s easily the least comforting. At the risk of oversimplifying a complex argument, essentially he argues that each mass shooting lowers the threshold for the next. He argues, we are in the midst of a slow-motion “riot” of mass shootings, with the Columbine shooting in many ways the key triggering event. Relying on the work of Stanford sociologist Mark Granovetter, Gladwell notes that it’s a mistake to look at each incident independently:

'As the country battles drug epidemics, mass incarceration and nationwide addiction, the people being increasingly affected by these issues are being left behind in the discussion. They are white women.
“Men and their behaviors have gotten the attention, especially when it comes to drinking and substance use treatment,” said Jonathan Lowe, executive director of clinical services at Turnbridge addiction treatment center in New Haven. “We’ve concentrated on the noisy person, but women had to keep things quiet because they were holding things together, certainly not expected to have addiction problem.”

'We have not and will not be admitting boys to our organization. There is no organization that more thoroughly understands the value of programming designed specifically for girls, delivered in an all-girl learning space. Those programs are resoundingly effective.

The Girl Scout Cookie Sale is the largest girl-run business in the world — girls raise millions to fund their Girl Scout activities and learn the entrepreneurial skills they will one day need in the corporate world. And if they want to earn their Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouts, they gain an honor recognized as a benefit in college admissions and will enter a rank higher should they join the Armed Forces. Gold Award projects are as impressive as the girls who achieve them. One candidate’s project this year has been working within the STEM community to create prosthetic hands with 3D printers.'

'What started as a shouting match in a Cook County courtroom last year is now on the verge of shaping state policy for pregnant women in jail waiting for trial.
The contentious case heard in August before a longtime judge inspired a bill — passed last week by the Illinois House and Senate — that seeks to reduce the likelihood that expectant mothers charged with nonviolent offenses will be held in jail as they wait for their cases to be tried.
The bill requires judges to find an alternative — such as electronic monitoring, placement in a drug-treatment facility or personal-recognizance release — for women likely to give birth while in custody. Judges can order pretrial detention only after holding a hearing to determine if a woman poses a threat to others. The provisions apply only to women awaiting trials in county jails, not those sentenced to prison.'

'COMMUNITY outrage is growing over the decision to release two women who bashed a paramedic so badly while they were drunk that he needed three operations and still can’t work.
A Facebook post with a photo of one of the woman, Amanda Warren, walking from court after her original conviction and holding up her middle finger to the cameras has attracted almost 500 responses and 70 comments.
Ms Warren, 33, and Caris Underwood, 22, had their sentences quashed this week because they had difficult childhoods and had battled drug, alcohol and mental-health problems.
Two years ago, after a daylong binge on bourbon, champagne and cannabis, the two women had repeatedly punched and kicked veteran Victorian paramedic Paul Judd, who was left with a broken foot.
Mr Judd wiped away tears on Tuesday as Judge Barbara Cotterell overturned the women’s prison sentences imposed last December in the Melbourne Magistrates Court.

'A gender discrimination suit against a Rhode Island university filed by a male student accused of sexual assault will move forward.
The Providence Journal reports U.S. District Judge John McConnell Jr. rejected Johnson & Wales University’s motion to dismiss the case.
The Massachusetts man, identified only as John Doe, says he was expelled in November after a woman he occasionally had sex with claimed he had sexually assaulted her twice. According to the suit, Johnson & Wales violated Title IX by not allowing Doe to defend himself. The suit also claims the university conducted an unfair investigation.
The suit asks the court to allow the plaintiff to return to school and expunge his disciplinary record.'

'A University of Akron professor inadvertently devised a creative new way to insult female students this week, all in the name of boosting gender equality.
Liping Liu sent an email to his Systems Analysis & Design class outlining the "categories of students" who may see their "grades raised one level or two." One of those categories was listed as "female students," indicating Liu intended to artificially increase women's grades based on their gender. In the email, which was first posted to Reddit on Monday, Liu said the move was part of a "national movement to encourage female students to go [in]to information sciences."
In a comment to The College Fix, Liu elaborated on his reasoning: "Liu’s own classes have 'one or two female students' on average in a class of 20 to 30, and they are 'not doing well,' he told The Fix in an email. These women will probably have to 'repeat the courses or leave the program' without a grade boost."

'The Office of Equity and Diversity has found junior Armaan Premjee responsible for charged policy violations after a nearly yearlong investigation into sexual assault charges from last April. A hearing will be held on Friday to determine sanctions.
In July, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office decided not to continue pursuing a criminal case against Premjee after a judge ruled that Premjee would not be held to answer.
“There is no indication of any withdrawal of consent,” the judge wrote in his ruling in July. “There is a very strong indication that the alleged victim in this case was the initiator of any conduct between the defendant and the alleged victim.”'

During a Center for American Progress conference, Gillibrand intended to talk about the importance of women but instead ended up tacitly blaming men for the 2008 recession.
“If it wasn’t Lehman Brothers but Lehman Sisters we might not have had the financial collapse,” she asserted.'

'The material teaches that women can change their mind about consent the day after an encounter, effectively leaving women with the ability to re-write history and accuse sexual partners of inappropriate behavior despite receiving consent.
Sydney Jacobs, a former student at American University, told Red Alert Politics she was threatened with academic probation when she did not complete the online training during the Spring semester of 2017.
“As a reminder, any undergraduate student that does not meet this requirement will be referred to Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution Services and be assigned an educational sanction,” an email sent from the AU Wellness Center to Jacobs read in part.
...
“This is a program that is now mandated by public schools, as in school’s paid for by the taxpayer, saying that it is okay to rescind consent and then man is always at fault. That’s a problem,” Jacobs said.'

'One third of able-bodied American men between 25 and 54 could be out of job by 2050, contends the author of “The Future of Work: Robots, AI and Automation.”
“We’re already at 12% of prime-aged men without jobs,” said Darrell West, vice president of the Brookings Institution think tank, at a forum in Washington, D.C. on Monday. That number has grown steadily over the past 60 years, but it could triple in the next 30 years because of new technology such as artificial intelligence and automation.
It could be even worse for some parts of the population, West argued. The rate for unemployment of young male African Americans, for instance, is likely to reach 50% by 2050.
“That, my friends, is a catastrophe,” West said.'
