And despite the gender stereotype that boys are more likely to be the problem children in school, the researchers found that girls constitute the majority of youths who struggled the most academically, socially and behaviorally.

University of Illinois social work professor Kevin Tan and his co-authors -- graduate students Gaurav Sinha, Esther Shin and Yang Wang -- suggest that school practitioners use failing grades and disciplinary referrals during eighth grade as red flags that students may be in need of extra support when they transition to high school.

'What started as a shouting match in a Cook County courtroom last year is now on the verge of shaping state policy for pregnant women in jail waiting for trial.

The contentious case heard in August before a longtime judge inspired a bill — passed last week by the Illinois House and Senate — that seeks to reduce the likelihood that expectant mothers charged with nonviolent offenses will be held in jail as they wait for their cases to be tried.

The bill requires judges to find an alternative — such as electronic monitoring, placement in a drug-treatment facility or personal-recognizance release — for women likely to give birth while in custody. Judges can order pretrial detention only after holding a hearing to determine if a woman poses a threat to others. The provisions apply only to women awaiting trials in county jails, not those sentenced to prison.'

'COMMUNITY outrage is growing over the decision to release two women who bashed a paramedic so badly while they were drunk that he needed three operations and still can’t work.

A Facebook post with a photo of one of the woman, Amanda Warren, walking from court after her original conviction and holding up her middle finger to the cameras has attracted almost 500 responses and 70 comments.

Ms Warren, 33, and Caris Underwood, 22, had their sentences quashed this week because they had difficult childhoods and had battled drug, alcohol and mental-health problems.

Two years ago, after a daylong binge on bourbon, champagne and cannabis, the two women had repeatedly punched and kicked veteran Victorian paramedic Paul Judd, who was left with a broken foot.

Mr Judd wiped away tears on Tuesday as Judge Barbara Cotterell overturned the women’s prison sentences imposed last December in the Melbourne Magistrates Court.

'A gender discrimination suit against a Rhode Island university filed by a male student accused of sexual assault will move forward.

The Providence Journal reports U.S. District Judge John McConnell Jr. rejected Johnson & Wales University’s motion to dismiss the case.

The Massachusetts man, identified only as John Doe, says he was expelled in November after a woman he occasionally had sex with claimed he had sexually assaulted her twice. According to the suit, Johnson & Wales violated Title IX by not allowing Doe to defend himself. The suit also claims the university conducted an unfair investigation.

The suit asks the court to allow the plaintiff to return to school and expunge his disciplinary record.'

'A University of Akron professor inadvertently devised a creative new way to insult female students this week, all in the name of boosting gender equality.

Liping Liu sent an email to his Systems Analysis & Design class outlining the "categories of students" who may see their "grades raised one level or two." One of those categories was listed as "female students," indicating Liu intended to artificially increase women's grades based on their gender. In the email, which was first posted to Reddit on Monday, Liu said the move was part of a "national movement to encourage female students to go [in]to information sciences."

In a comment to The College Fix, Liu elaborated on his reasoning: "Liu’s own classes have 'one or two female students' on average in a class of 20 to 30, and they are 'not doing well,' he told The Fix in an email. These women will probably have to 'repeat the courses or leave the program' without a grade boost."

'A woman from Corinth claimed she was raped. Now, state police say her story was false.

Linda Ives is charged with falsely reporting an incident and providing a false written statement. She's due back in Glens Falls City Court next Tuesday.

State Police say Ives showed up at Glens Falls Hospital last October and said she was a victim of a crime while in Hadley, but their investigation found it did not happen.'

'The Office of Equity and Diversity has found junior Armaan Premjee responsible for charged policy violations after a nearly yearlong investigation into sexual assault charges from last April. A hearing will be held on Friday to determine sanctions.

In July, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office decided not to continue pursuing a criminal case against Premjee after a judge ruled that Premjee would not be held to answer.

“There is no indication of any withdrawal of consent,” the judge wrote in his ruling in July. “There is a very strong indication that the alleged victim in this case was the initiator of any conduct between the defendant and the alleged victim.”'

Police say Krista Glover, 36, intentionally attacked and injured another person at a home on Marsh Hawk Place in Ponte Vedra Beach. Glover Tweeted Tuesday that an incident did occur.

According to a St. Johns County Sheriff's Report, Krista Glover told deputies, "When the [PGA] Tour hears about this, you will lose your job. Wait til I talk to the judge ... you will be (bleeping) fired."'
