John Waters wrote an important opinion piece for the Irish Times, where he looks into the causes for the ever-increasing rate of male suicides. He expresses frustration about how society doesn't want to understand why young men are killing themselves in such high numbers, and would rather leave the question to "experts" who can come up with biological reasons for depression rather than exposing the anti-male climate we live in today. It's a great article.

Earlier we had reported on the Canadian women's groups that have refused to sit at the table with father's rights advocates to discuss changes to Canada's divorce laws. From this National Post story: "Although the consultations ended last month, the Justice Department and its provincial partners are considering a special session for "women's equality-seeking organizations" that are fighting proposed changes to the federal Divorce Act. Those changes would give separated and divorced parents an equal say in raising their children under a new concept called shared parenting. The women's groups are urging governments "not to cave into a father's rights groups agenda."" Apparently it's okay to cave into the agenda of the women's groups, though.

Calvin Washington, 45, has been released from a Texas prison after 14 years, according to this article on CNN. He was convicted of rape and murder, but DNA evidence has now exonerated him. From the article: "I'm speechless," Washington said after leaving the McLennan County Jail. "It was hard to do time like that knowing you didn't commit the crime."

This article in Christian Science Monitor tells the story of an African American state trooper who was pulled over, essentially, for "Driving While Black." He took it to court, believing he had a case, but the system apparently believes prejudice is OK if one is a police officer. Next, it'll be Spanish speaking people, then it'll be men in general...

I was notified of this report from the Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly which proposes that women should receive lighter sentences than men for the same crimes. Part of their reasoning behind this is that since women are the primary caregivers of children, they should be treated more leniently for the sake of their children. Absolutely incredible...

AngryHarry sent in a link to this new web site, which seeks to address the gender inequalities and double standards that senior citizens in the UK face. Examples include benefits that women can take advantage of at age 60 while men must wait until age 65, including discounted bus passes, state pension, winter fuel allowance, prescription drug discounts, and tax breaks. This is all the more unfair considering that men die on average several years before women, lessening the years that men can enjoy these benefits even if they began at the same age as women.

This article on Excite News claims that male sperm counts have been on a steady decline for several decades, and that both genetics and environmental factors could be contributing to a rising number of male infertility problems and testicular cancer. The scientists believe the problems are beginning in the womb, and that adverse environmental factors such as hormone disrupters, probably acting on a genetic susceptibility, could be to blame. "Hormone dirupters" may be found in--among other things--paint, pesticides, and detergents.

This article describes a new procedure for prostate cancer patients who do not respond well to radiation treatment. Previously, if radiation therapy was not successful, patients were left with no other options. Now, Medicare will reimburse patients for cryotherapy, which destroys a tumor by freezing it.

I, personally, am using the time off not for bar-b-que and fireworks, but to contemplate the course of human freedom in this country, why it was established, and where it is going. Now the subject of a television movie and an opera, convicted murderer and prostitute Aileen Wuornos has admitted that she killed six men because she had "always wanted to kill somebody." At her trial, she claimed the six men had assaulted her on separate occasions, and that she acted in self defense. She now says she wants to drop her appeals and allow the state to carry out her execution. If released, she says, she would kill again. It makes me sick that the arts have rallied around her, and turned this murderer into a hero while her victims become criminals.

Although there's been much talk in the news about "male menopause," a scientist in this article on Excite News admits there is no such beast. Nevertheless, he adds that men who suffer from androgen or testosterone deficiencies in advancing age could benefit from hormone replacement therapy. Says the doctor: "Male life expectancy is increasing and the quality of life for aging men plays a more and more important role; and of course, women notice the benefits of HRT and wonder why there is nothing equivalent for their partners."

Nightmist writes "Wendy McElroy's latest column exposes the truth behind the news reports on Andrea Yates, the woman who recently killed all five of her children by drowning. McElroy touches on all the different ways in which this woman is being protected by media and feminists: from blaming society to blaming the children's father. This is one the best explanations of what's happening with this story that I've seen."
